Hair transplant is a good option as a treatment for hair loss because of its permanency and the fact that it is real hair that is actually restored into the scalp.
One may ask how is it possible for hair to be transplanted to bald men when they are already bald. The answer is simple. Even bald men do not lose a ring of hair around the back and sides of their heads. This is not affected by the balding process because the hair follicles in these areas are not affected by DHT or dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that causes the follicles in the front and top of the head to shrink and stop growing hair.
During a hair transplantation surgery, a piece of skin that contains follicles and comes from these unaffected areas, such as the back and sides of the head, is removed. Then the follicles are extracted from the surrounding tissue, after which they are reinserted into the balding areas of the scalp.
The good thing about it is that the follicles are not affected by the hormone DHT. Thus, these follicles still grow hair even after they have been moved from the back of the head and inserted to the front.
A word of caveat though; most patients are sure to see continuous hair loss from the non-transplanted hairs that were growing at the front and sides of their heads before the transplant. Thus, there might be a need for additional transplants once the density of the hair is lessened and the aesthetic result wanted is no longer achieved. However, only a limited amount of skin can be removed at one time. This means roughly 2,500 grafts is the most that can be done at one time.
It is also a helpful tip that if one decides to go through this procedure, he must choose a good doctor who will make a careful and studied placement of follicles on his head, in order to achieve the best aesthetic result and create the illusion of a full head of hair.
