Hairstyle Don'ts

Not Every Style or Trend Should Be Followed

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
With every season there is a hairstyle trend that sets a precedence and before you know it it's a widespread epidemic. Unfortunately, that includes trends that aren't nearly as attractive on some as others and in some cases just shouldn't be done. Changing hairstyles and re-inventing yourself with a bit of creativity is one way to increase self-esteem but being extremely drastic is sure to make memories of bad hair days you aren't prepared for.

Don't go Dark, Darker, Darkest

Going darker than your normal shade is one way to really change your sense of style but be careful on your color choices. Much like the mantra "less is more" sometimes the lighter of the two shades may be a better choice depending on your natural hair color, skin tone and eye color. Going from blond or red to black will easily wash out your features. Even naturally black hair doesn't need the blackest of black dyes to cover grays. Often a choice in soft black or natural black will cover grays without the harsh "wicked witch" look. For mature women hair that's too dark not only looks completely unnatural but ages you substantially.

Don't Pump Up The Extra Volume

With many hair products, style tools and techniques to create volume there is a point when too much is just too much. Creating super high volume is usually done by teasing hair which can damage it. Unless you plan on doing a bee-hive keep the " her highness" hair to a minimum. Creating hair that's of full of life is very different from having full blown eighties Bret Michael's hair.

Don't Go Stiff

Although there are many versions of the bob hairstyle it's ordinarily shoulder length or shorter. This cut can be worn with curly, wavy and straight hair but letting it get "stiff" dulls the potential of a bob cut. High-lights, low-lights or wispy layers creates depth on this hairstyle. Wearing a bob that's grown out by an inch can change the entire style and become a helmet of hair.

Don't Fly Away

Frizz, frizz and more frizz is the topic of many hair discussions and is problematic for curly, wavy or straight hair. Although a smoothing serum helps to keep the fly aways down this is an issue that should be handled with delicacy. Too much serum and your hair will fall flat and look oily while too little won't keep the frizz and fly aways in place. Other products such as leave-in-conditioners and flexible hold hair spray will help manage unruly frizz. After your frizzes and fly-aways are smooth leaving them alone is the best way to keep them from resurfacing.
