Hairstylist Marketing Strategies: Part Two

Nickole Hogan
There are many things you can do as a professional hairstylist to market yourself. I will share with you some of my most successful marketing strategies to help you be more successful. Part two of three in this series of articles will talk about how to prepare you for the client experience.

1. Listening Skills. I am sure you have all heard many stories about "other" salon and hairstylists. The true horror stories of hair! Many of those stories are all rooted from the same cause-lack of listening skills. It is essential to be able to truly listen to what your clients wants and doesn't want. Most everyone thinks they are good listeners. The truth is most of us really needs to practice listening. I find a good way to determine if I heard the client correctly or not is to repeat back what they've said in my own words.

2. First Impression. Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you look the part. Are your roots grown out, color faded, and make-up not done? We are in the beauty industry and we need to look like we are expert in beauty. Take care of your image because this is part of what markets your business. If you don't look good, you will be judged negatively by your clients.

3. Trendy Stylist. Another important marketing strategy is to keep up with the trends of hair and fashion. Most often clients come in asking for a celebrity style, cut or color. Although you can look it up, it will make you look like a pro when you know what they are talking about. Why not be proactive and think about a trend that would look good on your client before they even show up to the salon!
