Haiti Earthquake Damage Tales on Twitter and Facebook

Stories of Haiti Earthquake Damage Came to Light Much Faster Due to Social Networking Sites like Twitter and Facebook

The earthquake in Haiti, with the magnitude of 7.0, struck near the Haitian Capital of Port-au-Prince, as most of us are aware. The Haiti earthquake damage has been devastating, as in every other case where Mother nature lashes out. But below, we see the power of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, in times such as these.

Haiti is among the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. But what is amazing is the fact that Internet connectivity has been fairly good, despite the high magnitude earthquake in Haiti. Thanks to the Internet connectivity, several people have been constantly sending Haiti earthquake damage updates to their loved ones across the world.

Twitter, Blogs and Facebook are all playing a major role in spreading information about Haiti earthquake damage.

Twitter:
Twitter has proved helpful in transferring information and images across the globe during other crisis too.

'Sydney Morning Herald' reported that the information and images of the Haiti earthquake damage are reaching the world much faster due to tech tools, even before the news agencies get done with such updates. As we were tuning in to see Haitian officials giving updates, eyewitness accounts from Haitians had already been tweeted. So in those 140 character tweets, they were letting the world know what the news agencies took far more time to cover.

Facebook:
A group by the name of 'Earthquake Haiti' already has more than 14,000 members, at the moment. This is being used as a platform to- exchange valuable information about the Haiti earthquake damage; request for assistance; and show support and solidarity to our bothers and sisters in Haiti.

Wordpress-powered blog:
A blog called 'Haitifeed' is providing first-hand information about the Haiti earthquake damage. Apart from this, it is also providing media reports from all across the world, so that people in Haiti can view what is going on outside Haiti.

For the first time in a very long time, I have realized how valuable social networking can be in times of crisis. I hope that locals in Haiti are using these means to contact each other too. I just hope the loss is minimal.

God bless all those who have lost their loved ones and are trapped. RIP to the ones who were taken away by Mother Nature.

Didn't know that about the Facebook group. I'll have to go join. I was just watching tv where they pulled a 2 year old little boy out of the rubble and showed him returned to his parents with the biggest smile on his face. This earthquake was absolutely horrible. You wrote a very good article on this--thank you!
