Haiti Earthquake: How You Can Help

Several Ways You Can Make a Difference

Matthew Steed
The recent earthquake in Haiti has caused unimaginable damage to the infrastructure of, and to the people of Haiti. However, when disasters like the 6.7 magnetite earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 strike, there's one thing that is never destroyed and only made stronger by such events: the human spirit. And although we may be far from Haiti; divided by miles, boarders, and even language, we are, in reality, one family.

If you look at articles I've published in the past, most of them have to do with planning for a vacation to Walt Disney World, Las Vegas, London, or some other travel destination. But for the people of Haiti, such luxuries as travel are the farthest thing from their mind. Right now, they are looking for lost loved ones, grieving for those that died, and even fighting for survival as supplies become scarce. So, how can you help in this great time of need? Below, I've listed just a few of the larger organizations that are currently helping in the relief efforts. And in tough economic times like these, I know it may be had to even come up with with few dollars to donate, but every little bit helps.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross supplies food, shelter, and basic needs after a disaster and they are doing the so in Haiti. You can make a donation in any amount at RedCross.org. The American Red Cross has also set up a texting service by which you can donate. Simply text "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10. The $10 will be billed on the cell phone bill and the money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti.

Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders)

Doctors Without Borders provides medical care to people times of crisis. Donations to its Haiti relief efforts will help repair obstetrics and trauma hospitals in Haiti that were damaged in the earthquake. They money will also go toward transporting 70 doctors with medical supplies to the Haiti to set up makeshift emergency medical response centers. To donate, go to doctorswithoutborders.org or call 1-888-392-0392.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity provides affordable, safe shelter for low-income families and people in need. Money donated for its Haitian relief efforts will go toward rebuilding shelter for those in need. To donate, go to habitat.org or call 1-800-Habitat.

UNICEF

The United Nation's agency UNICEF works for children's rights, their survival, development and protection. UNICEF uses the money for health care, clean water, nutrition, education and emergency relief. To donate, go to Unicefusa.org or 1-800-4-UNICEF.
