with a stone for a pillow
and a hand that won't move.
I know there is one
missing a child
and a leg
and hope.
I know there are those
who go without sleep
who refuse to stop
until every one
is unburied.
I know there are sacrifices
greater than I'll ever make
but they make them in Haiti.
I know my help
will not be enough.
but I will give it.
I know it hurts so bad
a little boy cannot
possibly bear it
but he bears it.
I know there is a stench of death
I'll never smell
but they smell it.
And I know there are miracles.
A little girl
in her father's arms
at last lifted out of the rubble.
A woman
barely breathing but alive
after 5 days buried
under stone.
A line of living
souls being given
food and water
from strangers
who somehow
seem to love them.
That I know.
