Haiti in the News - Earthquake 2010

The Crisis of Haiti and the Agencies that You Can Donate to Help a Shattered Nation

Liz Gamble
One of the smallest, darkest, isolated countries in the world has tumbled to a pile of rubble. The news has reported that almost 200,000 people were killed or died from the earthquake that devastated Haiti. This poor country has literally been leveled but has risen to the top of every civilized country's attention; all eyes have been diverted to this catastrophe. Italy, Sweden, England, even China has sent help to Haiti in the past 12 days and will send even more in the following weeks and months with America sending the bulk. America will send the manpower, the money, the food. Twelve days of pain and destruction, seemingly with no reason......a mad god, angry devil, or natural forces? No one knows the reason, but we all know that we can't let people suffer - they need hope.

Don't be quick to blame God, either. It appears that He has the only answer and way out for this planet. Is there a lesson in this devastation? Are we being shown that any country could be destroyed unless we stop fighting and start working together? Any precious government could fall, Is this another lesson of Peace for our world? If, maybe we all weren't so hardheaded and greedy? Maybe we could have learned our lesson with Katrina or the assassination of MLK or John Kennedy? Why are we so selfish?

Here is what God could have come up with, looking back. Ever heard the old saying - It is more blessed to give than to receive? Every country, the US included, obviously has not learned this lesson yet. We are giving millions and millions, holding fund raisers, sending clothes and food all over to provide for a small up till now, forgotten country. Did we have this idea in mind as an answer to our recession, right in the middle of our recession? I don't think so. We are just too self-centered as a nation for that. But if you step back and take a look at it, giving is the only way for us to free ourselves of the selfishness and the only way for Haiti to survive. Let's give everything you have to help this poor country, who have nothing to give back to us. And yet that is exactly what we are doing and it is coming from the hearts of so many people who wouldn't think to give to another cause.

Once again let's look at the sequence of events. Haiti cannot survive without help; and we cannot go on any longer not helping them. That puts us all in a very unique situation - one of giving and receiving to such an extent that all limitations and boundaries are broken off. It will no longer be an issue of blacks helping blacks or rich helping the poor or whites helping their own because when you turn this around, God is the one giving to those who give to Haiti.........and God is beyond rich and does not have any color. He simply is. And this world simply keeps on revolving as it should. It is people helping people.
