Haiti to Receive School Bus Donated by Charlotte Church Group
Haiti Will Soon Have a School Bus Filled with Needed Items that Were Donated by Charlotte Residents
When news of the earthquake in Haiti reached this group their generosity took on a new form. The idea of donating a bus full of needed items seemed like the right thing to do.
Although a mission north of Port Au Prince had received help in the past from South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church members, a bus was a new idea. Donations were received quickly and made ready for the bus trip.
The bus is now filled with clothing, rice, beans, other food items and donations. The packed school bus was taken from North Carolina to Florida. The bus will be shipped from Miami to Haiti where it will be used by a local mission.
The South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church plans on purchasing another school bus and repeating this effort. This unique idea may spread to other groups.
Haiti continues to need help. Sponsors are needed to pay for airplane tickets for medical personnel and volunteers. Trucks are needed to move donated medical items to Miami International Airports. Donated items that are now in Charlotte must be moved to Miami in order to be shipped.
Local groups that will be accepting donations for Haiti's earthquake victims include most churches in Charlotte. Contact the church of your choice in Charlotte for more details or use some of the links provided.
The Charlotte Presbyterian churches are looking for volunteers who can go to Haiti to help with relief efforts. Also cash donations as well as disaster relief kits as needed. See the Presby site for details.
Haiti will receive aid from many Charlotte based groups. Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti is partnering with Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road in Charlotte. Physical donations may include peanut butter, canned foods with pop top lids, water, flashlights with batteries and solar lanterns. Also needed: Deodorant, flip flops, jeans, sneakers and used cell phones. For more details contact Sabine Guerrier @ 704-890-9903.
