Haiti Struggles While Charlotte Residents Scramble to Help
Haiti Will Continue to Need Help as Time Goes On
Some in Haiti are already familiar with previous Charlotte rescue efforts. Some Charlotte residents have been involved through churches and community groups to help Haiti deal with poverty and medical issues for several years. Recently groups in Charlotte that were focusing on hurricane disaster relief began helping with the earthquake relief efforts.
Hurricane relief has been an ongoing effort for some churches in Charlotte. However, once the earthquake occurred more groups got involved.
To donate for this relief effort you may give money online using one of the links below. If you are making a donation by mail be sure to indicate on your check that this is a donation for the earthquake in Haiti.
Local organizations that are helping with collections for Haiti include several listed below. This is by no means a complete list:
Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti: This group is now partnering with Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road in Charlotte. Physical donations may include peanut butter, canned foods with pop top lids, water, flashlights with batteries and solar lanterns. Also needed: Deodorant, flip flops, jeans, sneakers and used cell phones. For more details contact Sabine Guerrier @ 704-890-9903.
Stop Hunger Now will assist in delivering the items collected. A link for this group is listed below.
Money can be donated in person or by mail to Haitian Heritage and Friends of Haiti, 5502 Bentgrass Run Drive, Charlotte, NC 28269. For phone numbers and websites for the Salvation Army and others please click the contacts link below this article.
Haiti will need continued support from Charlotte for years to come. If you are not sure which group you should donate to be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau before making a decision. Unfortunately many make their living by running scams whenever a disaster occurs. However, it would seem most churches are a safe place to donate.
