Haiti: US Now Working to Prevent Child Trafficking - We're Needed

Response to an Idiot: Who Else but the US Will Do Anything for Haiti's Vulnerable Children?

Donald Pennington
We all know what's going on in Haiti. Beginning January 12th, 2010, the country was rocked by a devastating 7.0 magnatude earthquake, to be followed by a 6.1 aftershock. At the Earthquake Map, readers can verify that several earthquakes have occurred around the globe on a regular basis, and this particular event was of epic proportions.

Thus far, the response of Americans has been one of concern for the innocents, and even the not-so-innocents of Haiti. We've given, and we'll keep giving, as we can.

In my previous piece it's brought up that we're all lucky to have the particular problems we do, and it's not hard to give. Everybody here who reads it, agrees.

Within days of American response to the tragedy of Haiti, some are piping up about the possibility of the US "taking over" in Haiti.

There are challenges of America having always wanted to commandeer the country. Claims are made that our folks are down there for more than to be helping to dig, treat the injured, clean, cook, and care.

Now, American service people and volunteers are coordinating to save the children of Haiti from the vilest of operator, the trafficker of children. Folks in different parts of the world want to give us crap for taking charge of, and handling the situation in Haiti? Our fellow Countrymen and women are risking as much as they need to, not only for the initial rescue operations, but now we're even taking up for the most vulnerable, and we're getting crap?

We're needed there.

Much like when another person is hurt, the first responder might have to not only help the injured themselves, but also assume command of the immediate environment, US volunteers would logically need to enact an air of control to even function.

How else can any form of an organization enter a bass-backwards spot like Haiti, save lives, restore order, some comfort, and begin re-building, without "taking over?" Wouldn't a far more accurate term be "taking charge?" Doesn't it make sense that American forces and volunteers "take charge" in Haiti right about now?

So what else would this doof expect? Are we to just drop crates of food and supplies onto the beaches of Haiti and let folks make-do somehow? If America , or any country for that matter, is to effectively rescue this little nation the need for authority to act is evident.

If aforementioned blogger might think they know a better way to help the people of Haiti, well America could sure use the money-savings, he's welcome to make his suggestions in the comments below. I certainly won't stop him from looking the idiot about Haiti and America's response.

Thanks for writing this, the children and people of Haiti need our help! I've been reading about the child trafficking, how sad and horrible.

Right you are, Don. In the first few days after the earthquake, it was imperative that order and structure be restored. The U.N. already had troops on the ground there and did a pretty good job of getting things together (from some of the reports I've read) and the U.S., once they got in, did the same (and this is not to mention coordinating the efforts -- the U.S. is part of the U.N., after all). This Passant character is worried about American hegemony, which could be a future concern, but in the current crisis is an assertion based on what? Our involvement in Vietnam? That was an ill-advised war. This is a relief effort. People like Passant are a hindrance during a relief effort, seeing the hobgoblins of the crushing overlords always keeping the proletariat down. We need to help re-organize and rebuild Haiti before we start pointing fingers at the U.S. (or the U.N.) and screaming "Takeover!" Good job, Don...

Thanks for speaking out about this! The ones who're berating Americans for their help and concern are probably doing nothing about the problem themselves!

Kudos to you for expressing this.

    so sad...

  • Sheryl Young1/30/2010

Sad this is happening in Haiti, but it's going on in our own neighborhoods, under our noses too.

What a great way to phrase it Valerie.

Ah well, the hell with him. On AC, many contributors have written a lot of articles to raise awareness on child trafficking; (search on the two words). On his blog, nothing --all he can do is instigate hatred.

I could not post there either! We will keep this going, Don! If we have to save children we will! I promise!
