Hale and Hearty Soups, New York: A Restaurant Review

The Best Soup in New York and Great Prices Too

Tina Molly Lang
Hale and Hearty Soups is a New York chain restaurant serving soups, sandwiches, and salads. The first location opened on Lexington Avenue and 64th St. There are other locations spread throughout New York in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island. Hale and Hearty Soups has many locations in midtown on the east side. There is also a Hale and Hearty Soups stand at Grand Central Terminal.

Hale and Hearty Soups, New York: Menu

One of the perks of Hale and Hearty Soups is that the menu rotates everyday. Although I visit Hale and Hearty Soups several times a week, there is always something new to try. According to the fliers, you could eat there every day for three months and have something different every day. They also let you sample before you order.

At Hale and Hearty Soups, they have staples such as lentil soup which are served every day. Others, such as different kinds of chili and chowders, rotate every few days. Occasionally you get unusual choices like Creole Gumbo or Senegalese Chicken with peanut. If you're not in the mood for soup, you can order always order a sandwich or a custom-made salad.

Hale and Hearty Soups, New York: Taste, All-Natural, Slow-Cooked

Hale and Hearty Soups are among the best-tasting in New York City, and that's no small feat considering the number of fine delis in Manhattan. My favorites include Tomato Basil, Texas Chili, Sweet Potato Corn Chowder, and Tomato Cream, though you can't go wrong with any of them! Each soup is made with all-natural ingredients, and is slow cooked to allow the full flavor to develop. Each soup or salad comes with bread or crackers. I recommend the 7-grain bread.

Hale and Hearty Soups, New York: Price

Hale and Hearty Soups are very reasonably priced, especially by Manhattan standards. A small soup typically runs $3-4, a medium $5-6, and a large $6-8, depending on the soup.

Hale and Hearty Soups, New York: Best Times to Eat

I tend to avoid the locations around Midtown East and the areas near Grand Central or Rockefeller Center between 11:30am and 2pm, as the restaurants get packed with financial and office workers taking their lunch breaks. Most of the time, however, crowding is not that big a problem. The Hale and Hearty locations in Upper East Side and Upper West Side are never overly packed, so I usually get a good seat. Many people just order and go. The locations usually close 8 or 9 on weekdays, 6 or 7 on Saturdays, and 5pm on Sundays.

Hale and Hearty Soups is a great place for lunch, a mid-day refresher, an on-the-go quality meal, or an afternoon of studying. With the selection of hot tasty soups, Hale and Hearty Soups lives up to its name.
