Halle Berry Tried Black Men, Fell for a White One: No Need to Explain
Her March Interview with Essence Magazine
"I tried Black men. I tried...I married two Black men. You know I tried."
Berry went on to say,
"I don't hold all Black males responsible because of the two bad eggs I got...I even dated Black men after my last divorce, but this is just where I found love."
Halle Berry's remarks have stirred up the hornet's nest, with some black folks labeling her the ever popular term "sell out", for having gone over to the white side. Never mind that Halle is also mixed, just as white as she is black. To some, Halle Berry is a traitor.
The two "bad eggs" that Halle Berry tried are David Justice and Eric Benet, former husbands who cheated on her. Berry also dated Wesley Snipes, who allegedly hit her hard enough to cause hearing loss in one ear. After 2 divorces and a decade of dating black men, Berry found love with Gabriel Aubry, a former model, but more importantly, a white guy.
Though I don't like or dislike Halle Berry, I felt an unexpected empathy for her when she happily announced that she was pregnant. Berry spent a large portion of her life with no good men and whether she was at fault or not, I thought it was great that she had found true love with a man who respected her and treated her right. The fact that he was white mattered little. Or so I thought.
The Essence interview reminds us all that plenty of folks never quite got over Halle Berry's latest choice in men. While there are plenty of folks, both white and black, who are happy for Berry, those that aren't are absurdly angry. What doesn't make sense is how Berry can betray her half black heritage when dating a white, but doesn't betray her half white heritage when dating a black.
Eric Holder believes we are a nation of cowards, afraid to talk about race. Yet race seems to be all we ever talk about. Halle Berry's preference in men shouldn't matter, yet because she somehow crossed the lines of what many folks find acceptable, it does.
Halle Berry, you don't need to explain anything.

People expect Black women to just stick it out and put up with whatever Black men feed us. I beleive Black women need to start dating outside of our race, just like Black men date outside the race all the time. We need not to worry about this kind of judgemnet. I'm glad she found love.
