I moved into this house across the street from an elementary school. I was super excited for Halloween to come as I love to decorate and give out candy now that my boys are grown and I can not take them trick or treating. I get very into the festivities of the fall season and for me Halloween is one of the most fun. I am known for taking everyone's children out for candy. I have had more than one child tell their parents, "Mommy please don't send me with Cindy again, I am so tired." Yes I love Halloween.
So my first year here we decided we would make the house nice and scary and dress up as creepy witches and scare all the children while we handed out candy. We put up the decorations, we put on a creepy CD full of screams and howls, and we even borrowed a fog machine.
Well it was a wonderful success. My aunt who looked like a mannequin witch, sat in a chair with a large bowl full of candy and waited for all of our unsuspecting victims to approach the porch stairs that were covered in webbing, scary lit jack-o-lanterns, and little black rats with red glowing eyes to show them the way. The street was dark and there were no other houses with any lights or Halloween festivities going on. The fog poured off the porch. The scary CD echoed on the empty dark streets with loud shrieks and screams that begged for mercy.
We waited patiently at first, I figured I'm across the street from an Elementary school I will get tons of children in costumes on my porch. To my total disappointment almost an hour passed and no one came. I restarted the CD, refilled the fog machine, and went to turn on more lights inside the house when I hear screams of little children running away in fear. I come outside and here come some more children with their families. My aunt sits down in the chair again and still as a statue. A group of children with their father approach. The father standing by the curb. One of the little boys in the group asks, "Is she real"? I reply, "Why don't you go find out"? He replies in a shaky voice, "But I am only a little boy." He is scared and shaking, so I lightly put my hand upon his back to reassure him it's okay. He finally get's brave enough to walk up the steps and his father comes closer to protect him. Suddenly she stands up, they all scream and the father runs the fastest and the farthest as the little boy freezes in fear at my feet.
We all laughed so hard, well not that little boy, he looked to be about 10, the look of horror still had not left his face as they walked away. We even gave him extra candy. The father must have spread the word, we did not get many trick or treaters but a lot of people came to take pictures.
I have heard people walk by on a lovely summer day and say to one another, "Did you know, the lady who lives there is a witch"? I just laugh to myself. It has been almost six years, and I have had no trick or treaters. I still decorate the house and I still buy candy. I put on scary CD's, make jack-o-lanterns, roast salted pumpkin seeds, light candles, and I sit on the porch dressed up in costume and wait for some one to scare. They drive by, slow down, take pictures, and move on. I even buy the good candy.
