Halloween: Anniversary of the Dead

Texas Cold Cases

Texas is famous for a lot. For example, the music scene has turned out countless chart topping artists such as Leeanne Womack, George Strait and ZzTop just to name a few. The popular eighties nightime drama, Dallas brought tourists from all over to take a look at SouthFork Ranch. Big Tex, our well known spokesperson who has never spoken stands a hundred feet tall, waving to everyone as they walk past him on fair grounds each year. Walker Texas Ranger
filmed here in the metroplex. Movies such as Places in the Heart were filmed in Waxachie,Texas.

Of course, no one will ever forget John F. Kennedy was shot in the big D. From the Texas Chain Saw Massacre to the tragic events in Waco, Texas is also famous for occult related crime. These events could have taken place anywhere, but they just so happened to take place here. Speaking of murder and betrayal, thirty yrs. later the most most famous case of unidentified human remains ever to come out of Texas is still unsolved. October thirty-first marks the anniversary of the death of a young woman who's body was recovered just hours after having been slain. She was found wearing only Orange Socks, hence the orgin of her nickname.

The body was located in a culvery or drain pipe outside Georgetown, near interstate thirty-five. Part of the problem in identifying her has been she may may not be from Texas. A matchbook from Holiday Inn indicated she may have at least passed through Henryetta, Oklahoma. If she was travelling she could be from anywhere. The evidence and location combined, she may have been hitch-hiking.

Her age was estimated to be anywhere from twenty to twenty-seven years old. So, she was either just starting out in life or closer to thirty. Her hair wasn't extremely long or especially short, ten inches in length. A one fourth ince hairline scar is her most prominent identifying mark. She also had pierced ears. The unidentified woman was estimated to be between five-eight and five-ten, weighing one hundred thirty-five to one hundred forty pounds. Therefore, she was tall for a woman though her weight wouldn't have been too far from the appropriate amount for her height. She wasn't skinny, but she was hardly obese. ORange Socks had features such as a large nose, red or reddish colored hair and an oval shaped face with a long chin. See for yourself what she looked like at http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/33uftx.html There you will find a sketch of the victim along with all her other information some of which I've already stated here in this article.

So, who killed Orange Socks? Henry Lee Lucas claimed to have picked her up while she was hitchiking to Oklahoma City. The self proclaimed serial killer was on death row for her murder when he recanted his confession thereby persuading governor, George Bush to excuse him of the death penalty which led to his sentence of life in prison for other murders. He died of natural causes while incarcerated. This maddman, Henry Lee Lucas recanted countless confessions making it difficult to say who actually did kill Orange Socks. However, he claimed to be a member of the infamous, hand of death cult and her body was found on Halloween just hours after her demise.

Was this an all saint's day prank turned dirty? Could there have been some other unreasonable reasoning behind her death? The medical examiner determined she suffered from chronic [untreated] gonorrhea. PErhaps someone killed her for passing along a curable disease though std's were prevelant in the late seventies they weren't as understood socially. In my opinion it's not likely she realized she had this condition. Her teeth were in perfect condition. Who has optimum dental hygiene and allows their feminine health to get so out of control? She died from strangulation which makes the killer sound more like an angry lover than a serial killer out for random thrills.

It does makes sense that she was hitch-hiking. Besides the match book from Oklahoma there were anonymous tips from a female caller who said she saw the unidentified victim hitch-hiking near Gerogetown, Texas the day of her murder. By the way, authorities are still searching for the unidentified caller. Was she simply a person who passed ORange Socks on the highway or could she have known more than what she was willing to tell the police at the time? One could speculate a lot, but without a written statement from the witness we will perhaps never know the truth.

Have there ever been any leads in this case as to the true identity of the girl known only as ORange Socks? Missing person, Lisa Jane Borden seemed to fit the criteria. A couple of months ago I was sure a match could be made. Lisa was nineteen years old at the time of her disappearance, standing five eight, weighing one hundred forty pounds. After submitting my suspicion, I was informed within several hours that the prospect had been suggested before, failing to meet potential match criteria. Lisa had screws and metal in her left hand due to injuries from a car accident. She left Texas for California in early October though she called home in late OCtober with plans of returning to the lonestar state. Her boyfriend sent a ticket for her, but she never retrieved it. An unknown friend claimed she was waitressing in Amarillo. Her family are still trying to determine what hampered her journey home.

You can view Lisa Jane Borden's profile at http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/14dftx.html

If you know anything about the whereabouts of Lisa Jane Borden please contact the authorities immediately. If you have any information reguarding Orange Socks whose identity is still unknown please do the same.

It is clear that ORange Socks may never be identified, but she has to be from somewhere and her mama had to have had a name for her. IF you know of a family missing a young woman between the ages of twenty and twenty -seven please review her profile and then go from there. This case can be solved, but someone must come forward. It's much easier to solve a case when a body has been found than when one is burried in the ground. One would think it would be much easier, but 6,ooo unidentified dead prove otherwise.
