Halloween Book Burning Planned by Amazing Grace Baptist Church of Canton, North Carolina

"We Destroyed Everything as Planned."-Amazing Grace Baptist Church on 2009s Halloween Book Burning

Annually, the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, North Carolina hosts a book burning on Halloween. In 2009, AGBC's book burning caused a media sensation. It seems this year (2010), that the church does not want to cause the same media stir as it did last year. This event is closed to the public and only church members invited by Pastor Grizzard and those invited by special invitation are allowed to attend.

According the Amazing Grace Baptist Church's website, the church is claiming last years book burning as a success although there is currently no evidence the book burning took place. The book burning event was held in doors and there are state laws in North Carolina regarding paper burning. Instead it seems that ACBC shredded books instead and had a paper tearing event. To the people who questioned the burning the church stated, "Our goal was to destroy garbage as noted below, and we did just that. We didn't care how it was destroyed; only that it was destroyed. These same people must have never heard about "Paper, Rock, & Scissors." Scissors cut paper, and paper tears real easy. We destroyed everything as planned."

The church expressed success because it rained (causing less protesters and media attention) and disappointment because no other Independent Fundamental Baptist churches or individuals joined with them to stand up for the King James Version of the bible which according to ACBC's religion is the only bible that should be recognized.

The purpose of the book burnings/shreddings on Halloween is to collect the "perversions of God's Holy Word", ungodly books by "heretics" and movies and then destroy them because they are satanic. The church believes through them God is helping them "encourage other believers to do what God's Word says in Acts 19 about burning satanic books."

KJV of Acts 19 (18:20)- "And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

Books the Amazing Grace Baptist Church plans to burn/shred on Halloween 2010 and has put on their ever growing "perversions" list include these bibles: New International Version, New King James Version (The Gideon's use this one), The Evidence Bible, The Green Bible, Good News for the Modern Man, Bible in Rhyme, Book of Mormons, Community Bible-Catholic (the church devotes an entire section to the Catholic Church called The Great Whore), The Good News Bible, and many others.

Just a few of the "heretic" writings the church plans to purge include works by The Pope, Wescott & Horte, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Swaggart, Jack Van Impe, Jerry Falwell, Elizabeth Elliot, C.S. Lewis (author of the Chronicles of Narnia), Dan Brown (author of the Da Vinci Code), and many others. You can view the church's heretic's page here.

Other items included in the book burning include movies and music the church deems as satanic or ungodly.

What about recycling? Sometimes churches "become" the news instead of spreading it. So many interesting points to this story.

How strange. I wonder... They must buy these books? Someone must? So, perhaps they are adding to the royalties of the "heretics."

This makes me so angry! and in response to David--I am not so sure any of these people CAN read.

Living in the United States offers us freedom of religion. I guess it gives churches the right to do nutty things as well. This is just bizarre.

Yes, we all know the writers who included drunks and bawds that helped translate the King James Version of the Bible were all touched by the hand of god. Well, at least the Amazing Grace Baptist Church is doing its bit for recycling rather than adding to air pollution, although I understand that being against pollution is the devil's work!

I wonder if any of the congregants there have ever read a little book titled, "Fahrenheit 451"?
