Halloween Costume Idea for Friends: Pullo and Vorenus

Sophia S. Mark
If you are going to be celebrating Halloween with a friend and are looking for a unique costume idea for multiples, the HBO show Rome provides with the perfect characters- Pullo and Vorenus. Throughout the show the Roman soldiers become inseparable, regardless of who's service they find themselves in. As Halloween characters the duo is a great choice because their participation in several battles, brawls, and standoffs made them the most memorable members of the cast.

Going as Pullo and Vorenus for Halloween you can dress up as Roman soldiers or play the part of Roman citizen. Both costumes are fun, but very different and call for a great difference in detail. Here are some ideas to create your own Pullo and Vorenus Halloween costumes.

Since this is a costume idea for multiples there are a few basics that need to be dealt with. If you and your friend are relatively the same size, the character you choose will not matter. If not, then the larger of the two should play Pullo and Vorenus should be portray Vorenus' character. Another detail to consider, if you are both the same size but one is blonde and the other dark haired, then Vorenus is blonde and Pullo has brown hair. Even if you prefer one character over the other, deciding who should be which character based on appearance would make it more believable.

Pullo and Vorenus as Roman Soldiers

Fighting for the thirteenth is where the bond that the pair shared began, so dressing up as Roman soldiers seems fitting. In the HBO series, the Roman soldier garb worn by the two when fighting was not at all glamorous, or the pristine outfits you are used to seeing in other films.

To create a basic Roman soldier costume you need to begin with a basic grey or tan tunic, think long tee shirt, that falls to the knees and matching pants. The pants that were worn though are not the pants you are used to wearing, think something more like thermal underwear that ends at your calves. Over the tunic top and the pants you can wear simple chainmail, or the closest looking piece you can find, that falls to the knees or a set of chest armour and skirt. Add flat sandals that you can bind up the leg, shin guards and wrist cuffs. Carry a fake sword in your hand to complete the outfit.

Pullo and Vorenus as Roman Citizens

As Roman citizens we see both Pullo and Vorenus in several different outfits, but it is always very simple. This works great as a costume, because simple is easy and cheap. The one constant in the wardrobe of both men was the practical looking tunic, that ranged in color from clean linen to dirty grey. Like the top worn by soldiers the tunics were a single piece, fell to the knees and were sometimes worn over trousers. A wide leather belt can be worn around the waist, and a fake dagger tucked in fits well with the characters. Also, even when Pullo and Titus were no longer soldiers or soldiering they still wore the sandals of a soldier and kept the wrist cuffs on.
