Halloween Costume Ideas: Creative Ways to Spice Up the Night!

Break Out of the Coffins and into the Creative Flying Pan

Paul Bright
If you've been to your local superstore, you've probably noticed that the Halloween costumes are already rollin' out of the stock rooms. They've probably got all your Turkey day preparations right behind them. And it's only September! Although it may seem a tad too early to buy the pre-manufactured costumes, it's never too early to get started if you are going to do something a little more on unique side for your dentist's favorite night. I've done a little research to give you a jumpstart on the crowd so that, if you are a man, you won't have to dress up yet again as a woman. You'll see that most of the costumes can be made from items you get at thrift stores and the craft section of most any superstore. Let's get those creative juices flowin'!

Males

One easy idea is to dress as a Chick Magnet. Glue some old Barbie dolls (pick them up dirt cheap at a thrift store) onto some old grey clothes. Glue a few strips of aluminum foil around your chest. You can even throw a few paper clips and other small, magnetic items in between the Barbies. Don't forget the shades and really bad cologne!

Wanna try and get some extra candy? Try becoming a Candy Protester! Get yourself some hippie-like clothes (tie dye, shaggy wig, Patchouli and Birkenstocks) and draw up a picket sign that says "Candy Is Bad For You". The key to the costume is tying a basket around your waste with a sign on it that says "get rid of it here". Free the Raisenettes, man!

How about becoming the King of Pop? No, not THAT one. This guy is truly royal…if you worship aluminum. Make yourself a scepter and glue an A&W can on the end since it is gold. Get yourself a purple or red cape (easily found in someone's linen closet). Then collect all the different pop cans you can find. The more variety, the better! Fashion yourself a crown out of one brand, and then glue a few of the others to your clothes. If you want to step it up a notch, print out some of the soda logos, cut them out, and glue them to your cape.

Females

Ladies, you can brandish your creative side with royalty as well. You can start off as Ms. Canada: dress up in old blue jeans, red suspenders, plaid shirt, fake beard, and a sash that says "Ms. Canada". Don't forget your knit cap and your can of "Canada Dry"!
If you want something a little scarier, try the Mummy-To-Be: Get yourself some gauze and do the traditional mummy wrap, except put some padding around your stomach to look like you're going to give birth at any moment. If you have the time, you can wrap up a baby doll in gauze and put him in a stroller.

To go for a little more magical costume, try being a Diaper Genie. Do your best Barbra Eden (try using old sheer curtains for color), but then put on some large safety pins and diapers on your costume.

Groups

Group costumes are really fun if you start super-early on preparation. This idea is perfect for families and is sure to gain a lot of attention. The big key is to start early because there's nothing like being the Two Amigos when there isn't enough costume material for the Third Amigo.

Wizard of Oz- so many characters to choose from any so many different directions to go in. You can do all munchkins, the main four (with Toto) or even one bad witch and all flying monkeys!

Race Car Driver and Pit Crew- Pick your favorite driver and get the pit crew ready! Get some cheap tools in the toy section of a thrift store; find some matching jumpsuits. Get yourself a large box for the car and don't leave out your favorite driver's sponsors!

Black eyed Ps- everyone dresses in black, black make up on one eye each, and a large white letter "P" on your chest.

Couples

If you have a partner-in-crime, it's fairly easy to do couple costumes since couples are always hot in the press: Dog the Bounty Hunter and his wife, Beth; Kevin and Britney; Brad and Angela (buy a lot of ethnically diverse baby dolls to add flavor. Or you can go with something a little more unusual like E Male and Attachment: Dress in black, paint the letter "E" on yourself. The female of the couple should make a large paperclip (and find several small ones) and glue them on an all black clothing, Try to stay "attached" the whole night. You can even sometimes walk off without the female, come back and say "oops! I forgot my attachment." Yes, it's corny, but extra attention usually gets extra candy.

Have fun this Halloween and remember it's not how much you spend on your costume, its how much candy you have at the end of the day!

Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.
