Halloween Costume Ideas: Easy to Make at Last Minute

Julia Bodeeb
Sometimes it is difficult to find the exact Halloween costume you want. That's why making costumes is fun and also ensures that your costume will be unique. With any large piece of felt you could make many different types of Halloween costumes. So be creative and enjoy making a DIY, frugal and fun Halloween costume.

To make a costume use felt, a large needle and embroidery thread. After cutting the felt into the pattern shape, it should take less than an hour to whipstich style sew the costume together.

Flapper

A flapper costume is always fun to wear. This costume can be very flirty. Make it by whip stitching together some black felt in the shape of a straight, sleeveless dress. Make the dress long enough to cut some fringe into the bottom of the dress. Cut slices into the felt to add the fringe at the bottom.

Create a head band out of felt and make a slit in it to hold a colorful feather. Feathers can be found at most craft stores.

Psychic Octopus

The psychic octopus at the World Cup this summer got a lot of attention. Have some fun pretending to have "special skills" as a psychic and dress up on Halloween as this special octopus.

Get some brown felt and whip stitch a costume in a shape to cover the body. Then make all of the arms of the octopus out of felt. Make them stiff by adding empty paper towel rolls to the arms, or use rolled up poster board.

Use poster board to make some small signs that give predictions about upcoming sporting events. Attach them to the costume with safety pins.

Pencil

Create a pencil costume for Halloween. This costume idea will amuse kids and writers. Just get some yellow felt from the craft store. Whipstitch a costume in a long straight style. Add a band of gold felt at the top of the yellow felt. Or wear the band as a loose necklace. Then add a cap made of deep pink felt to portray the eraser at the top of the pencil. Add a little sign on the costume that says "No. 2" to carry on with the pencil theme.

Big Red Heart

This costume idea is easy to put together and will make everyone smile. Get some poster board and some red felt at the craft store. Make a heart shape on the poster board that is wider than you are. Fold the large piece of felt in half.

Next use the poster board heart as a pattern to cut out a heart shape on the felt. When the heart is cut out whip stitch the two pieces of felt together. Cut arm holes into the sides of the heart.

Then turn the costume inside out and use glue or safety pins to attach the poster board heart to the inside of the front of the costume. This will keep the heart shape stiff as you wear the costume.

Wear leggings under this costume and a red long-sleeve t-shirt. You may want to add a red head band made of felt too. You could decorate it with glitter or bejeweled pins.

Happy Halloween!
