Halloween Costumes for Free - Costume Ideas for Your Old Graduation Gown

Bonus Ideas for Adding Humor to Your Costume

Lori Wheat
Everyone has graduated at some point in their life. Graduations often begin with the adorable kindergarten graduation, then proceed on to graduation from middle school or junior high, then on to the ubiquitous high school graduation, and perhaps end with college and maybe even a graduate school graduation ceremony.

Free Halloween Costume

What to do with the old cap and gown you have stored away? Use it as a free Halloween costume.

Free is the key word. A trip to your local costume shop to either buy or rent a Halloween costume will likely result in sticker shock. Plus, who wants to rent a costume and wear what someone else likely wore to last year's Halloween parties.

Do it for the Environment

As the environmental slogan says, "Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!" Feel proud of yourself for saving money and doing your part to save the earth by reusing an old garment.

The Graduate Costume

Dress up as "the graduate" at the next Halloween party. Perhaps carry as an accessory a rolled up piece of paper with a ribbon tied around it as your diploma.

If you'd like to add some humor to your costume, get out the old curling iron and super stay hair spray. Tease up those mall bangs and wear the cap tilted back on your head, held steady with old bobby pins. You have now set yourself apart from any other graduates - you are a 1980s graduate! Remember to remove the bobby pins before tossing your cap into the air to signal the end of graduation.

The Judge Costume

Already done the graduate costume? Be a judge instead.

Consider rolling up your hair in a big wig old style judge fashion (think George Washington hair) and shake on plenty of white baby powder or corn starch for the white wig effect. Leave the cap part of the graduation gown in the old storage box, and simply wear the black graduation gown, which will look like a judge's robe.

For humor, carry around a gavel and yell "order! order!" whenever the Halloween party gets out of control.

Get Creative

There are bound to be numerous other Halloween costume uses for old garments you would never have an opportunity to wear again. Dig out your old high school prom dress and go to the Halloween party as a prom queen. If you have an old 'Miami Vice' style white suit that was all the rage in the 1980s, dig it out and go as the 80s prom king. Bonus points for sporting a mullet hairstyle!

Great article! Now if only I could get my 8 year old to do one of those with her graduation gown. She wants to be Hannah Montana, only her skin is fairly dark, so the blond Hannah Montana hair really doesn't look right. LOL But, I may just have to give in anyway. ;-)

Great idea! I guess it's been a long time since I wore a graduation cap/gown, but I had to rent mine back then! I have been scouring the library and internet ideas for inexpensive costume ideas. There's come good ones out there! Dave
