1) Udderly Silly Cow
If anyone has seen those ridiculous cow costumes people wear, you know what I'm talking about. They have the plastic-like udders sticking out from the rest of the body leaving a nice-sized pouch between the costume and the skin. Why not take advantage of your belly being big to fill in the space. It's supportive and somewhat whimsical - pregnant or not. However, with a belly it can be comforting to know that people aren't staring at your belly because it's big, but because the utters are sticking out of a walking cow.
True, it may not be something for every pregnant woman, but, for those who just want to go out for a night of fun and festivities, it can be a costume that is almost guaranteed to fit the belly comfortably. Also, the plastic-like material used is somewhat hard so it adds a little protection to the belly area. However, finding the costume may be a tad tricky. Lately it's been only available (in our area) in costume shops, meaning if you want to dress like a cow then you better order it early or you may not be guaranteed a rental. Your only other option is to find a halloween store (yes, they exist!) early in the season and see if they have one in stock or can order one before Halloween.
2) The Virgin Mary
When I first mentioned to someone the idea of a pregnant woman dressing up as Mary, they didn't quite grasp onto what I meant. However, when I explained the whole pregnancy-door-to-door-rejection type Mary, she caught on and thought it was a brilliant idea. This one may take some real work in finding suitable clothing - depending on the area. You can always wear normal clothes underneath a robe that resembles many of the drawings and paintings of Mary, or, you can come up with your own attire idea - which may require sewing.
The best part of this costume is you don't have to get fancy on any of her attire. That means less you have to pay when it comes to accessories needed to pull off this idea. Even better, if you can convince the other party in your life (or even a guy friend) to dress up as Joseph and make the theme complete. It's unique - I've not seen many Virgin Mary's running about on Halloween and it's relatively comfortable for the mother-to-be to wear since nothing is constricting the body.
3) Pregnant Prom Queen
This costume idea blends the best of two worlds. Being pregnant and being silly in regards to teenage pregnancies. Sure, the idea of a teenage pregnancy isn't too funny, but, dressing up like a pregnant prom queen sure can be fun. After all, it's something you don't normally see out in public let alone on Halloween.
Dressing up as the prom queen can also be fairly easy and cheap to do - depending on where you can find 'glam' like dresses that would resemble prom attire. After all, buying a costly prom dress for an occasion may not always be in a budget or available. However, you can always try second hand shops to find an old bridesmaid dress that could be used as double duty for prom. If you're lucky in finding a dress, the next part is easy and involves crafting! Buy a sash and glitter or markers and create your own prom queen sash. Add one of those fun and cheap tiaras at toy stores and you're good to go. A cute, yet unique idea that not many would normally do.
4) Renaissance Lady
If you have ever been to a Renaissance Faire, you've seen these gorgeous dresses that women wear that truly are breathtaking. Even better yet, these dresses can vary from cheap to quite hefty in cost. Maybe you even have one already. Whatever the case may be, most stores sell reasonably priced gowns from the medieval periods starting at the beginning of September.
Why go Renaissance for Halloween? If anyone has seen or worn these dresses, by far, most of these gowns are so easy to get into and out of. Better yet they're fancy and tie in the back, meaning they have ample room to wear when pregnant and when not. The fabrics are often light and can be accompanied by a reasonably priced hooded cloak, too. It's a timeless look and you can add a tiara and be a queen - or even extend it to being one of those beautiful queens who has Snow White, Sleeping Beauty or any other fairy tale princess. Even post pregnancy you can use these dresses - be it an outing to a faire or even a Halloween down the road.
While the 4 ideas mentioned don't go far into details at all, doing what you feel is unique is what makes these costumes fun to wear. No matter what you decide to go as for Halloween this year or if you anticipate having a child and being pregnant next year, remember that above all else you want to be dressed accordingly for weather as well as comfort. Never try to get into a costume that could end up being a huge regret. Be safe, have fun and enjoy your Halloween parties, girls!
