Take inspiration from your children's favorite television shows and movies. There are many fun characters and the costume industry has several of these available as affordable costumes.
Dora and Diego or Dora and Boots. Dora the Explorer has been popular with the toddler and preschool crowd for several years. Many different costume shops and online stores offer these characters. Buycostumes.com has a Boots costume for $20. Either a boy or girl could wear the Boots costume, whereas Dora and Diego are gender specific.
Timon and Pumba. Two of Disney's most lovable characters, these costumes can be worn by boys or girls bringing smiles to neighbors and friends.
Woody and Buzz or Woody and Jessie. Disney characters are recognizable and the costumes are readily available. Because Disney costumes can be found at many stores as well as online, you can do a lot of price comparing to get the best deal.
Red and Yellow M&M. These costumes can be purchased in sizes from infants to teens online and in costumes shops. They can also be made for minimal expense at home. For easy instructions on how to create a set of M&M costumes for your kids, check out the webpage at Kid's Turn Central.
Mario and Luigi. Nintendo's favorite Italian plumbers can be a unique pairing for a couple of brothers. These price costumes vary in price. Buycostumes.com features them, but they are pricey at $35 apiece.
Dorothy and Glinda the Good Witch. Sisters can celebrate Halloween together dressed as the amazing women from the classic Wizard of Oz. Can't find a Glinda costume? Use a pink princess gown and top with homemade crown and make sure not to forget the magic wand.
Fairy tale themed costumes can be adorable choices for younger children. There are several to choose from but the top three include the following.
Hansel and Gretel costumes can be found for about $17 apiece at CostumeExpress.com. Jack and Jill is another fun fairytale pairing. Instead of treat bags for the kids to carry during trick-or-treating, have the children carry pails (plastic beach buckets work well) to complete the costume. For a sibling pair that includes an infant and young girl, consider costumes to represent the fairy tale, The Princess and The Pea. Dress your little girl as a beautiful princess and keep the baby snug in a peapod costume. Many retail stores like Wal-Mart and Target carry infant costumes, including the green peapod costume.
Other fun and unique pairings for siblings at Halloween include the following ideas.
Mustard and Ketchup or Salt and Pepper. These costumes work for any age or gender combination. Adult sizes of these costumes are also available for teens and taller children. To make these costumes from scratch, follow the directions provided at Kid's Turn Central. This website may also provide you with several other unique ideas.
Butterfly and Caterpillar. Infant caterpillar costumes are available at several online retailers for under $20. Varieties of butterfly costumes are also available but this costume can be made at home with a little creativity and glitter. The butterfly's body can be a black long-sleeve top and pair of leggings or fleece pants if your region is cold on Halloween. Wings can be made out of poster board, painted and made sparkly with glitter. Attach the wings with lengths of elastic ribbon found at fabric shops.
Tooth Fairy and Tooth. A tooth costume can be made by a creative adult handy with a sewing machine. Create a tooth-shaped tunic to slip over the child's head out of white felt or material. This would fit great over an infant or toddler's coat for trick-or-treating. A Tooth Fairy costume can be made from a regular fairy costume or create a costume using the ideas at Kid's Turn Central website.
Bunny and Carrot. Bunny costumes are plentiful at Halloween for kids of all ages and sizes. Carrot costumes can also be found for toddlers and infants for around $20 or less.
Mouse and Wedge of Cheese or Mouse and Cat. A mouse costume can be made from a grey long-sleeve shirt and grey leggings. Cut an oval-shaped piece felt to use for the mouse's belly. Mouse ears can be found at costume shops or in the costume departments at discount stores. Use makeup for the whiskers and twitchy nose. A cat costume can be made in a similar manner, just choose black for the shirt and leggings. An easy infant costume is a wedge of cheese sewn out of yellow felt and worn over clothes or a coat.
For older tweens and teens that may be attending a party together or helping to host their family's Halloween party there are a few fun ideas. For twins, boys or girls, the characters of Fred and George Weasley for the Harry Potter series are great. Dye their hair red and add a couple of Hogwarts robes and wands and you are set. From the Discovery Channel, most kids will recognize a pairing of Adam and Jamie from the hit show Mythbusters. Don't forget Jamie's oversized mustache!
There are so many fun and unique ideas for siblings at Halloween. If your kids are old enough, talk to them and find out what they would like. For the youngest children, choose costumes that won't restrict movement and will not be difficult to remove for a quick diaper change. Have fun choosing and creating the kids' costumes and then call your sibling and see if she will dress up with you this year!
