Halloween Costumes for Toddlers

Last-Minute Toddler Halloween Costumes

Catherine Spencer
It's almost Halloween and you don't have a Halloween costume for your toddler! Here are some last-minute ideas for you to quickly make an easy, cheap toddler Halloween costume.

Your toddler will be cute as a bug in this Halloween costume - it's a Ladybug Costume! You will need a red T-shirt or sweatshirt (depending on the weather where you live), black shorts or sweatpants, black felt (or recycle black cloth from an old piece of clothing), headband, black pipe cleaners, and fabric glue. Using fabric glue attach six black circles to the back of the shirt. For the ladybug's antennae wrap two pipe cleaners around the headband. Curl the tops so it looks like an antennae. To put the final touch on this Halloween costume, just apply some blush to your toddler's cheeks. Cute as a bug!!

Giddy-up partner! Make your toddler a Cowboy/Cowgirl Costume. Dress up a pair of jeans or bib overalls with a checkered or denim shirt. Tie a red bandana around the neck. Little girls with long hair can have ponytails and a little blush on her cheeks. Finish the costume with a cowboy hat and you're ready to go trick-or-treating.

How about a Little Hobo Costume? Dress your toddler in a pair of bib overalls with a plaid flannel shirt. It will look perfect and be warm, too. Stick a bandana in a pocket. Use Halloween makeup and paint on a fake stubble of beard. I've even used mascara to achieve the "beard" look. Find a short stick and tie a bandana "bag" on the end of it. Fill the bandana with wadded-up newspaper so it looks full. Your Little Hobo is ready to go to a Halloween party!

One of the cutest Halloween costumes for your toddler is this Puppy Dog Costume. You'll need a brown sweatshirt and sweatpants, tan felt, a stocking cap, an old sock (brown would be perfect), and fabric glue. Using fabric glue, add tan felt "spots" to the shirt and pants. You can also glue on a tummy to the puppy. Take the old sock and cut to the size tail you'd like your puppy to have. Use the fabric glue to make a seam and then turn right-side out. Stuff and attach to the pants by sewing or using a safety pin. For the ears, cut two pieces of felt into ear shapes. These can be sewn or pinned to the stocking cap. For makeup just use Halloween makeup and paint a black nose, whiskers, and a little blush to your toddler's cheeks.

A long-time favorite Halloween costume is a Ghost Costume. Cut a slit in an old white sheet and put over your toddler's head. It is safer for a child of this age not to wear masks or have cloth over their eyes so their vision is unobstructed. Cut the sheet short enough that it won't trip the toddler when walking. Put a big white bow in a little girl's hair or a stocking hat on a little boy. For makeup, just add some blush to color the cheeks. So easy, cheap and cute, too!

I hope that one of these last-minute Halloween costumes for toddlers will be helpful to you. Any one of these toddler's costumes will be so creative and different from store-bought costumes. Happy Trick-or-Treating!
