Halloween Craft Ideas: Black and Gold Stars Pumpkins

Landra Lynn Jacobs
These black and gold star pumpkins make for a whimsical piece of Halloween decor this fall season. Easier to create than carving a pumpkin, this project should be completed in only a couple of hours.

For this project, you will need:

- One pumpkin of any size or shape
- Soapy water
- Small dish cloth
- Paper towels
- Painter's tape
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
- Krylon Premiem Metallic Paint in Gold Foil
- Krylon Easy Tack Repositionable Adhesive
- Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
- Cardstock
- Several different sized star shaped stencils
- Pencil
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

Cover the place you will be decorating your pumpkin with sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Use a small dish cloth and warm soapy water to wash any dirt and/or debris from the outside of the pumpkin. Rinse the pumpkin well and dry with paper towels. Let the pumpkin air dry for a couple hours to make sure all the moisture is dissipated from the surface of the rind.

Spray the entire pumpkin, including stem, using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the pumpkin dry for an hour or two. Paint the entire pumpkin with two to three thick coat of Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Gold Foil. Dry for three to four hours before proceeding.

Place a sheet of cardstock onto a self healing mat. In pencil, trace several different sized star shapes from a set of stencils onto the paper. Carefully cut out each star shape using a craft knife. Spray the back of each star cutout with Krylon Easy Tack Repositionable Adhesive. Adhere the stars to the side of the gold painted pumpkin.

Cover the painted pumpkin stem with painter's tape for protection. Spray the pumpkin using a thick layer of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Wait thirty minutes before applying a second coat of black paint to the pumpkin. Continue to add coats of paint until the gold no longer shows through. Dry overnight.

Remove the tape and peel away the star cutouts from the pumpkin. This should reveal a black painted pumpkin with gold star designs and a gold colored stem. Give the pumpkin a nice thick coat of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray and dry completely.
