Halloween Crafts for First Grade

First Graders Love Being Creative for Halloween

Rebecca Rosenburg
First grade is a fun year for most children, and doing Halloween crafts is a great way to encourage creativity in the classroom. Classic craft ideas such as sock puppets, egg carton creatures, and paper plate masks can be great Halloween projects with a few fun adjustments. Your first grade kids will love doing these Halloween crafts!

Sock Puppet Halloween Style:

Materials:

old socks
markers
felt scraps
scissors
glue (fabric glue is best)

Directions: Give each student a sock. Students can use the provided materials to create a sock puppet of their favorite Halloween monster or character. Teachers should assist students with the glue.

Egg Carton Monsters:

Materials:

empty egg cartons- cardboard works best
scissors
construction paper
glue
markers
crayons

Directions: Cut egg carton into fourths, leaving the lid attached to the bottom. Each piece should have 4 egg slots with the lid attached. Give one to each student. Students can create an open-mouthed monster from their egg carton using the markers, crayons, construction paper, and glue. Teachers should assist with scissors and glue.

Paper Plate Halloween Masks:

Materials:

paper plates
markers
crayons
glue
construction paper
fabric or felt scraps (optional)
craft or popsicle sticks

Directions: Give each first grade student a paper plate and provide access to the other materials. Students can make a mask of their favorite Halloween monster or character. Teachers should assist with cutting eye holes. After students have finished their Halloween mask, a craft stick can be affixed to the bottom of the mask so student can hold it up.
