To start making your jack-no-lantern you will need to choose a pumpkin (or your favorite version of harvest squash). Be sure to choose one that looks healthy and that is fresh enough to last through Halloween. Also look for a pumpkin that is big enough for small hands to work with. A larger pumpkin gives a larger working space and will be easier for the young ones.
You can use a soft wax pencil to sketch on all the details of your jack-no-lantern's face; this will give children a pattern to follow. Or, you can let them go at it free hand. There is no wrong way to make a pumpkin face. This is a great opportunity to let the kids be creative.
Using craft paint, fill in your pumpkin's face details. This is a great place to use puff paint, because it will make the features seem to pop out. You can wash off any painting mistakes if you are very quick. Use a damp paper towel before the paint has a chance to dry, and you will be able to start fresh until you get just the look you want.
You can add extra features to your jack-no-lantern by using tooth picks to hold them in place. For instance, cut out sections of egg cartons will make three-dimensional eyes for your jack-no-lantern. And the foam trays that meat comes packaged in could be used to cut out ears. Attach them carefully with toothpicks so that the toothpicks don't show, and then paint over them.
You can use different sizes and shape of pumpkins and gourds to make a whole family of jack-no-lanterns. They make nice table centerpieces, and you could even give them as gifts.
Give your jack-no-lantern time for the paint to dry completely and then add any final touches, such as yarn for hair. Set him on your porch or window seal to greet your family and friends as they enter your home this harvest season.
Happy Halloween!
