Halloween Crafts for Kids: DIY Clay Pumpkin Patch

Pam Gaulin
Kids can make their own clay pumpkin patch. This is a fun and easy Halloween or Fall craft project for kids.

Halloween Craft for Kids: Age Appropriateness

This project may be made by children two and up, when an adult can make the clay, and supervise the project.

This Halloween craft project is ideal for pre-school children.

Materials Needed to Make this Halloween Craft for Kids

The main item needed to make the Halloween pumpkin patch is clay. You can make your own flour clay or purchase clay from the arts and crafts store.

When making the clay, divide the formed mixture in half and use orange food coloring on one half of the flour clay, and green on the other half. These are the only two colors you really need for this Halloween craft.

If you 'd like more colors, divide half of the clay into smaller portions, and use yellow or brown food coloring. For instructions on making other basic colors from the color wheel. For more advanced color mixingtechniques, read this.

In addition to clay and food coloring, you will need the following arts and crafts supplies:

Waxed paper and cardboard OR a plastic tray or place mat
dried or fallen leaves from outside

Tools Needed for Making this Halloween Craft for Kids

a plastic knife (older children) or a craft tongue depressor stick for younger children

Preparation for Making the Halloween Craft for Kids

Decide if each child will make his or her own Halloween craft, or if this will be a share project. For each pumpkin patch, cover a piece of cardboard or a plastic tray with aluminum foil or waxed paper.

This will be the "ground" for the pumpkin patch.

How to Make the Halloween Pumpkin Patch

Roll the orange portion into pumpkins. First, take a piece of clay and roll it into a ball. The pumpkin patch can include pumpkins of all sizes. Practice making big pumpkins and little pumpkins, and some pumpkins in between.

Use the craft stick or a plastic knife to draw lines down the pumpkin, to make it look like a pumpkin.

Plant the pumpkins by placing them all around the pumpkin patch.

Next, roll the green clay into snake-like pieces. Attach one end of the "snake" to the top of one pumpkin. This becomes the vine. Make more snakes, or vines, and attach all of the pumpkins.

As a final touch, drop a couple of fallen and colorful tree leaves to the Halloween pumpkin patch.

Other items to add to the pumpkin patch: a black cat, a scarecrow, or an apple tree.
