The most important thing to consider when decorating your yard for Halloween is the placement of decorations. First, you will want to make certain that your Halloween decorations are not obstructing or encroaching upon your walkway. Having a walkway that is free and clear for trick or treaters is essential, you wouldn't want anyone to trip and fall because of a poorly placed Halloween decoration. Next, you will want to make sure that the walkway is well light. Regardless of how spooky you would like your yard to look, making sure trick or treaters can safely navigate the walkway is more important. Often people use decorative Halloween lights to line the walkway. That way the lights not only provide safety for Halloween visitors, but they enhance the decorative theme. If you have decorations on the lawn, it is usually best to put up a border to block kids from cutting across the lawn. Kids get excited when they are on the hunt for candy and they usually don't watch where they are going. Blocking the yard from crossing ensures that nobody trips over anything placed in the yard.
Another thing to consider when decorating your yard or home for Halloween is what type of lighting you should use. Many people want to use candles because they enhance the look of the spooky yard, but they are really not the safest choice. With children coming and going from your yard in Halloween costumes for trick or treat a candle is an accident waiting to happen. Many companies sell battery powered lights that mimic the look of a candle. These lights can be safely placed in Jack-O-Lanterns and other Halloween decorations without risk of fire.
If you are planning an elaborate Halloween display or walk through, make sure that you have plenty of adults on hand to help. Stationing people throughout the yard or walk through will ensure the safety of your Halloween visitors. Plus, extra adults can dress up and add to your spooky Halloween theme.
Plan ahead by reading all the safety instructions included with purchased decorations. After setting up your Halloween decorations, do a walk through to ensure that you haven't missed a possible safety hazard. With a little planning and consideration for safety your yard can be spooky and safe.
