Halloween or Fall Scarecrow Face Decoration

Mary Wensing Dvorachek
Here is a fun and easy craft to make by yourself, with children or grandchildren. The kids can make it for a gift for Mom and Dad for the Holidays.

Supplies Needed

1 straw hat (about 14 inches across - measure from the underside of the straw hat from edge of brim across to the other edge)
4 ounces Excelsior (looks like curled straw)

2 - 3/4 inch brown buttons (I used a two toned brown)
1 - 1/2 inch brown button (two toned)
5 -1/4 inch brown buttons (2 toned)
Fall colored straw flowers
Fall leaves
3 yards fall designed ribbon (you want to purchase the stiffer ribbon, it holds its shape up better)
Fall berries
tacky glue or hot glue (your choice) I prefer tacky as it keeps its elasticity for years. Hot glue is faster, but in warmer or hotter weather it has a tendency to let loose)
floral wire or bread twist tie.

First you will want to make the hanger to be able to hang your scarecrow on the wall or on a door.

Take your straw hat and lay it on the table. Take you glue and squeeze it around the flat part of the hat (the rim). You want to cover the whole rim (except for about one inch along the very edge of the hat rim (don't glue that, it gives a much nicer appearance).

Take the Excelsior and pull off sections (it is purchased in a bag that is compacted). Now take the Excelsior/straw and put it around the rim. You want to make it look nice and full. Next Take your buttons and glue them on as the face. The 2 - 3/4 inch buttons are the eyes, the 1 - 1/2 inch button is the nose, and the 5 - 1/4 inch buttons are the mouth.

Take the leaves and berries and space them around the brim. Once place where you want them, pick on up at a time and dip it in the tacky glue (use the picture as a guide). Now it is time to add bow. Here is a website with step by step pictured instructions for making a simple fabric bow http://www.craftideas.info/html/simple_bow.html. Once the bow is in place it is time to glue on the straw flowers.
