Halloween Family Fun Movies Staring Abbott and Costello

Lorraine Hayden
If you are looking for a fun Halloween film without the blood, gore and in your face sexuality; I highly recommend the comedy team of Abbott and Costello. During the 1940's Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were big box office draws, pulling in $10 million in 1942. The duo was very popular on radio and they also starred in a half hour television comedy show from 1952-1954. They are best known for their comedy skit "Who's on first".

Abbott and Costello's comedy-monster spoofs clearly bring to life the innocence of their era. Unlike the horror spoof "Scary Movie" and its three sequels, you can comfortably watch Abbot and Costello with your children without sexual references and crude jokes about bodily functions.

You will get a good scare from of Dracula, without the blood. The Mummy is simply a a guy in torn sheets. The Wolfman has you on the edge of your seat without having to rip out someone's throat, and Frankenstein is just guy in need of a brain- Abbott's brain that is.

Here are some titles to add to your Halloween family movie collection. Sit back, have a good laugh with the children and enjoy.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

In this film Bud Abbott plays a character named Wilber and Lou Costello plays Chick. They are basically two Florida baggage clerks who were to deliver a pair of crates to a wax museum. Come to find out the crates contained Count Dracula played by the great Bela Lugosi and a weak Frankenstein monster played by Glen Strange. There is also the stranger Larry Talbot portrayed by Lon Channey Jr. who has followed Dracula and Frankenstein to Florida. Larry has is own little secret; at midnight during a full moon he turns into the Wolfman!

The comedic exchange between Abbott and Costello is hilarious. Horror greats Bela Lugosi and Lon Channey Jr. needed no CGI graphics in order to bring the monsters they portrayed to life. All you have are two guys in costumes and wonderful acting.

Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The comedy duo portrays American cops Slim and Tubby in London studying new police procedures. Their behavior results in them being kicked off the police force and they end up in jail. London doctor, Henry Jekyll played by Boris Karloff bails them out. Dr. Jekyll is secretly conducting scientific experiments at his home. When things go horribly wrong and Mr. Hyde emerges, Slim and Tubby are in crazy adventure through the foggy streets of London.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man

The team plays buddies who have just graduated from private investigator school. They get hired by a boxer named Tommy who had escaped from prison. He was convicted of killing his manager. A serum that renders Tommy invisible has the duo investigating the criminal underworld of professional boxing with an ending that will surely make you laugh.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy

This time the guys find themselves in Cairo, Egypt as Peter and Franklin. They get themselves mixed up in a plot that involves a stolen mummy, who just happens to have a cursed attached to it. Once again you have a classic Hollywood movie monster accompanied by the great comedic timing of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.

When I was a kid, I did not even think about Halloween being this or that; I was just excited about the chance to run around the neighborhood and get candy. I remember counting out my Baby Ruths and Butteringers and making a vow to only eat two pieces of candy per day. This was the 1960s, maybe the last age of any innocense?
