Halloween Favorites

The Best and Favorite Things that Go Bump in the Night Every October 31st

When you scan the internet you'll find a plethora of "Ten Best" and "Favorites" lists for almost anything. I thought it would be fun to combine some of the Halloween lists to create an overall "best" Halloween list. While it would be impossible to provide a 100% accurate accounting of the spookiest best and favorites, some Halloween things emerged as obvious favorites.

Best Halloween Movie

What would Halloween be without a spine-chilling movie that keeps you awake for a week after you watch it? The horror movie that made almost every Best Halloween Movie list was, of course, John's Carpenter's Halloween. Not far behind Halloween was Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Murders, and The Exorcist.

My personal favorite: As cheesy as it is, Night of the Living Dead would probably be at the top of my best Halloween movie list because, when it premiered back in 1968, it creeped me out for months. I had to buy a nightlight so I could sleep at night!

Favorite Halloween Treat

The winner is (drum roll)...anything Chocolate! Yahoo claims the top searched Halloween chocolate candy is Hershey's chocolate and Kisses, followed by Snickers. Tootsie Rolls were also a favorite and earned top spot on many lists.

My personal favorite: Whoppers. I never buy these to hand out or I will eat them for a week afterward.

Most Popular Halloween Costumes

Some costumes are trendy because they are based on current events, popular politicians and celebrities that are hot that year, but we can depend on certain Halloween disguises showing up at our doors every year without fail. The five most popular Halloween costumes are: Witches, Vampires, Skeletons, Devils and Ghouls. Next in line are Pirates and Princesses.

My personal favorite: Witch - I can transform myself into a witch from the clothes in my closet any Halloween I choose. I finish it off with the black witch hat I have in my Halloween box and I am Samantha incarnate!

Favorite Halloween Songs

Spooky Halloween music is a must for any Halloween event. Some favorites that kept cropping up for Halloween are:
- Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
- The theme song to the Halloween movies (That tinny repetitive sound loop instantly conjurs up Michael Myers peering into a window)
- 1962's "Monster Mash", sung by Bobby Pickett
- "Haunted House" by Jumping Gene Simmons
- The Academy Award winning theme song, "Ghostbusters" sung by Ray Parker, Jr., and
- Rocky Horror Picture Show's signature song, "Time Warp".

My personal favorite: The Eagles, "Witchy Woman" or Santana's "Black Magic Woman". Both these songs have hypnotizing melodies and mystical music tracks that transport me back in time to every fun, adult Halloween memory I want to remember.

Favorite Thing to Do for Halloween

At the top of most lists was dressing up in Halloween costumes and handing out candy, hitting the trick-or-treating trail, or attending a party. A family favorite was visiting a local pumpkin patch and carving a pumpkin. Brave Halloween souls preferred wandering with shaky knees through a haunted house or haunted corn maze, knowing that some horrifying (albeit fake) zombie or crazed psychopath would be waiting for them in every dark corner.

My personal favorite: Playing Halloween games at home with family, sipping on a cup of hot apple cider or coffee and Baileys!

Whether spooky or silly, there are some things that are non-negotiable when it comes to Halloween. You know, those traditions that, without them, Halloween just wouldn't be Halloween! I know I just couldn't let Halloween go by without at least plugging in my Jack-O-Lanterns that light up, or stretching some of that fake cobweb around the front door. And I HAVE to hand out candy from my bowl with the spooky hand sticking out of it! What are your personal Halloween favorites?

Getting so ready for Halloween as I read your article. Got to check out all those songs and You tube things. Once I was a pencil for Halloween. That is my most favorite wanna be costume I guess.

That's so funny. I remember watching "Night of the Living Dead" back in 1968 at a drive- movie and I was, also, creeped out by it. I thought it was the scariest movie I had ever seen.
