Halloween Gifts Safe and Affordable

Don Simkovich
Halloween gifts that are safe and affordable include many options other than candy. Discount stores, the Dollar Store, and the 99 Cent stores have a wonderful range of items great for Halloween, Christmas or birthdays.

Oral hygiene gifts for kids

Give Halloween gifts that promote good oral hygiene and yet are also affordable. Dental floss is one such gift. Buy one container of dental floss at a drug store, the 99 cent store, or online for just over $ 1.00 per unit.

Power toothbrushes aren't necessarily affordable if giving any quantities, but create some fun and excitement at the door. If a group of kids show up, ask them a trivia question or have some quiz on the hometown. Out of those who answer correctly, tell them to think of a number between 1 and 10 that you're thinking of. The one who's closest gets the power toothbrush.

Lights as trick-or-treat gifts

Mini-flashlights can be fun gifts to give at Halloween. Buy them from the Oriental Trading Company for $ 6.99 per dozen.

Glow sticks or glow-in-the-dark bracelets are also gift ideas that kids will enjoy. Hobby stores, online stores, or discount toy stores will carry them.

Sports stickers as gifts

Get stickers of the local baseball, football, basketball, or hockey teams and hand out one or more. Get a collection of them and then ask the kids "what's your favorite team?" If it's boys, you're likely to get some shouts. It's not just the gift, but it's also the excitement of how the gifts are generated.

It allows some interaction between giving the gift and those receiving it. It may be small, but this can help to create some positive memories for the kids receiving the Halloween gifts - and that's really the goal.

Reading material

Hand out a New Testament from the Gideons or Child Evangelism Fellowship. Provide coloring pages of Bible figures.

Find enjoyable stories for pre-schoolers at local discount stores or ask the local book store for ideas.

Here's an idea: for small children who come to the door, take a moment to show them a fun picture within the book. Again, this helps promote positive interaction.

Crayons, pencils, gel pens

Hand out crayons - either a small box or two to three crayons wrapped together with a rubber band.

Using creativity and some prior planning, there are many ways to make a child smile at Halloween without buying expensive candy.

Many of the gifts mentioned will have some value beyond Halloween. Here's an idea for families with toddlers. Read this article on entertaining kids using 2 liter soda pop bottles.
