Page by page, the tension grows.
Each sound alarms me.
Concentrate on words,
Not on the house's whispers.
Ignore growing fear.
Wind whistles outside
A branch scratches the window.
My heart skips a beat.
It's only the wind
I tell myself. It can be
Explained easily.
Just to be certain,
Switch on another lamp, hope
It fights the darkness.
Hum a tune, hoping
Nothing will see the coward
In the rocking chair.
Call the cat to sit
On my lap, so I am not
Reading here alone.
You can never be
Too safe on a spooky night,
So why take chances?
Just in case, I will
Go to sleep with the lights on.
I will ... just in case.

Thanks for all the kind comments, everybody!
Good Job! I love the story you create. My favorite verse is, "You can never be, Too safe on a spooky night, So why take chances?" I like how you ask a question and engage the readers!
Nice poem!
Creepy ghost stories always make me think that tree branches are fingers!
Sleeping with the lights on is pretty common on Halloween I dare say! Very nice Haiku!
