Halloween Mask Workshop at Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library

Anyone who hands out Halloween treats at their front door will realize that teenagers are more involved than in past generations. It used to be that kids stopped trick-or-treating, or their parents required them to stop, at around age 12 or so. Nowadays middle schoolers and high schoolers show no hesitation to get involved in what once was regarded as a children's activity.

In that spirit, Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library, through its Young Adult Program, is conducting a "Make Your Own Mask" activity for the older kids ages 11 to 18. The promotion states, "Creepy, realistic or couture," you design your own look."

Okay, parents, feel free to send your "kids" .... even if, oddly enough, it boils down to handing them the keys to the car. Just see if their well-educated selves can define "couture," short for "haute couture," French for "exclusive, custom-fitted clothing."

Baldwin Public Library will provide basis mask frames and an assortment of decorations. Participants may feel free to bring along their own embellishments.

The workshop is free of charge from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the library, 300 West Merrill. Visit baldwinlib.org or call (248) 647-1700.
