Halloween Night

Charisse Van Horn

The leaves are dragonflies with floating wings buzzing atop the autumn breeze

Lulling those who hear their whistle with the hum of Halloween

The clouds are thin sheets of cotton spread across the blackened sky while like a spirit presiding o'er the night; the moon ebbs the tide

With roar, cackle, and thunderous stomp the wave pulls to the shore

And Dracula, witches, ghosts and vampires knock upon each door

Syrupy forests of gumdrops and peppermint lend fragrance to the trees

While sweet sugared sparkles and bubblegum wrappers weave into the breeze

The last firefly has beamed its light and the glow once radiant fades

As trick or treaters turn in for the night to divvy up their trades

The cunning jokester, the magician's trick now lost into the dark

As winking cats rest peacefully and watchful dogs do bark

Costume trails make careful piles in front of bedroom doors

And tissued off traces of Halloween fun float towards the floor

Without sorrow or sadness and drifting to sleep while sugar plum fairies play

The children trade pumpkins for stockings and reindeer

For Christmas is on the way
