Halloween Party Games for Adults

How to Keep the Party Interesting with a Variety of Adult Halloween Games

Don Kress
Halloween parties can often degenerate quickly into boring, repetitive conversations without the right Halloween party games. Even Halloween parties with the very best Halloween costumes can get dry after everyone's seen the costumes to be seen and passed out the candy to the beggars. So, what can you do? A rousing round of Trivial Pursuit? Parcheesi? Every Halloween party that people remember later in the year by saying things like "Do you remember so-and-so's Halloween party last year?" is based, at least in part, on the games that keep the guests interested, absorbed, and having fun.

Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts are one of the most basic of party games, that rose to popularity in the 1990s. Depending on the size of your party, you can choose to hold a scavenger hunt in your neighborhood or apartment complex, or in your own home. Adding an adult twist to the game, you might try a tattoo scavenger hunt, having party guests draw their hidden tattoos on a piece of notebook paper, and then having party guests attempt to guess which guests have which tattoos. The same could be done with hidden body piercings.

Halloween Murder Mystery

Murder Mystery stories have recently become very popular for almost any get-together. The story follows a set script, which is available as a download from any of a number of murder mystery party game websites. These games give each of the guests at your party a specific role to play during the course of the game. Usually, one guest is designated the "murderer" while other guests act as suspects and must work out the clues as questions are asked of the group of guests in order to hone down the pool of potential suspects. Like the classic board game "Clue," the first guest to correctly identify the murderer is the winner of the game. You can choose to play for fun, if you wish, or play for a prize.

Monster Movie Trivia

Expanding on the classic "Trivial Pursuit" board game, Monster movie trivia may take a little time to set up, depending on how you want to play, but can be a ball to play when the game is played with monster movie enthusiasts. It can take one of two primary forms of play. In the first, guests may be shown a clip of a monster movie, either classic or current, and must correctly identify the title of the movie. In the second, the game is played using movie trivia cards more similar to the familiar "Trivial Pursuit" game cards. Guests must correctly identify the movie or characters within the move based on the trivia question given. These games are best played with pre-constructed game boards such as can be found at websites such as Amazon.com or at your local toy stores. This will make setup of the game much easier than if you had to write out the game cards or splice together the film footage yourself.

Once you've got your Halloween party game in place, the rest is up to you. For smaller Halloween get-togethers, you can easily adapt many of these games to take anywhere between one and three hours to play, depending on how interested your guests are in playing games as a means of socialization. Chances are good, though, that they'll be too interested in the game to even realize how much time has actually passed!
