5 Good Halloween Reads for Children

Paige Nieto
With Halloween close around the corner you may want to start getting into the spirit now along with your children. One good way to do this is to start reading to them about the holiday and have a good time reading some not too spooky books. Here are a couple of books to help you and your child get into the Halloween season.

Halloween-Anne Millard

In the shape of a jack-o-lantern, this simple book is especially great for toddlers because it is simple with pictures of children in costumes and simple rhymes. Parents will enjoy looking at this book with their young ones and the children will like the pictures and especially the fact that the book looks like a favorite Halloween decoration. This book is recommended especially if you have any young ones in your family celebrating their first or second Halloween.

Clifford's First Halloween-Norman Bridwell

Everyone loves the big red dog; well in this book you get to see him as the little red puppy as he celebrates his first Halloween with Emily Elizabeth. In this book Clifford's problem is quite the opposite of his usual one in the later books when he finds he is too small for most masks and costumes. Clifford's family searches for the perfect costume so he can go along trick-or-treating with all the other children and I think readers of this book will be surprised by what they pick for him.

The Witch Who Was Afraid of Witches-Alice Low

Wendy is a little witch who can't seem to catch up with her older witchy sisters Polly and Wog and they in turn tease their younger sister for not being able to do normal witch stuff. Eventually Wendy meets new friends who help her find her inner witch so she can prove to her sisters that she is on par with them. This is an "I Can Read" chapter book so this is especially great for new readers with short chapters and easy words.

The Bernstein Bears: Trick or Treat-Stan and Jan Bernstein

This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. It follows Brother and Sister Bear as they go out with their friends on Halloween night and almost follow the bad example of other neighborhood bears when they try to prank Miz McGrizz's house, an older bear that all the cubs are afraid of. However she catches them in the act and invites them into her house where they find a nice Halloween surprise from their elderly neighbor that teaches them that indeed appearances can be deceiving.

The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything-Linda Williams

A Halloween classic that follows a brave old woman as she walks home, followed by a pumpkin, boots, and other spooky objects that make scary noises in an attempt to scare her. Nothing fazes this lady as she walks home and these objects are left with no one to scare until the end of the story when they find out that in a way they can help each other. My old daycare teacher use to read this story every Halloween, so it has a special place in my heart and it is a wonderful story to pass along to your children.

There are many other wonderful books that will help your family get into the spirit of Halloween so don't think the list stops here. Go to your library or bookstore to find more to help your family enjoy that spooky time of year.
