Halloween Safety Tips for Your Cat

Shannon Frye
Halloween is one crazy day of the year that people dress up in costumes and run around in search of candy from house to house. This is a day that people go wild and perhaps run around like crazy people. There are a number of people who are up to no good during Halloween. Not to say that all people are up to no good on Halloween but it's a night that you don't really want to stay indoors. You will see a lot of scary and interesting people walking around on Halloween even without costumes. Some of these people do very mean things to cats, especially on Halloween.

The first thing that you want to do when it starts to get dark on Halloween is prepare for trick or treaters. You will want to keep your cat inside on this night. Make sure that you check through out your house to make sure that your cat is indoors. On Halloween there is a lot more traffic than usual because people are driving their children around to go from house to house or they are driving around to drop off their kids on Halloween. Most of these people are too busy looking out for children running across the street rather than watching out for cats. Plain and simply put, make sure that you cat is inside on this night!

People are especially mean to black cats. This is because black cats are known for causing bad luck, or so they say. Make sure that even if you have an outside cat that is black, bring the cat indoors on this night because some people love to try and run over cats, as mean as it may sound.

Watch out for decorations that you cat might get into white indoors. Keep away items that your cat could eat or try to eat. Make sure to keep your cat away from electrical cords that your cat could chew on. Make sure that you keep your candy away from the cat because chocolate can kill your cat just like it can kill your dog. Don't let your cat eat pumpkins either. Cats can actually choke on pumpkin seeds, so be careful!

Another thing to remember is that you should keep the costumes away from you cat. I know it might be cute to dress up your cat on Halloween but this can scare your cat into running out the door when you get visitors and that might lead to other problems. Your cat can also get spooked and run through the house getting the costume stuck on something and maybe even strangling itself. As cute as it may seem, it's really rather dangerous.
