Reading Halloween stories in the classroom gets kids excited about learning and involved in the written word. Every teacher knows that when kids are excited and involved they learn more and retain more of what they learn. Try these Halloween stories to liven up your literacy curriculum and have a little fun at the same time.

Visit Apples for The Teacher to print nine classic Halloween stories. These include The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, and Hansel and Gretel and The Old Witch by the Brother's Grimm. These stories make excellent choices for story time and give kids practice retelling stories and sequencing events, but best of all they are just plain fun to read.

Choose stories that are appropriate for the age level of the children in your class. Although young children enjoy a good scare, make sure the story isn't scary enough to frighten them of Halloween. Storytelling should be fun and engaging not a frightening experience. Use stories to Segway to writing activities.
