Now that fall is upon us Halloween is going to be here pretty soon. Halloween can be very exciting and enjoyable for toddlers and you can make it full of happy memories for your toddler. However, Halloween can become a nightmare if you neglect your toddler's safety as serious accidents involving young children are reported every year due to gross parental negligence. Toddler safety during Halloween can be easily ensured by keeping a few things in mind. The following are a few precautions for ensuring toddler safety during Halloween.

The most important precaution that you should take is to ensure fire safety during Halloween. Always buy fire safe Halloween costumes for your toddler and older children. Look for flame resistant labels on masks, costumes, wigs, beards and other Halloween accessories. These products are not only flame resistant they will also burn out very quickly, in case they catch fire, so that the flame does not spread.

When buying Halloween costumes for toddlers make sure that they do not have any flowing or baggy parts like sleeves or skirts that can catch fire. These parts can easily get caught in Jack-O-Lanterns or pumpkins with lighted candles in them. Also make sure that the costume does not hang to the ground on which the toddler can trip. If you are using a borrowed costume fold it and sew at the hem or secure with a belt to lift it up.

Your toddler should always be accompanied by a responsible adult when going trick or treating. Make sure to use reflective tape on the toddlers' costumes so that they can be easily seen in the dark and also try to use lighter colored costumes. Also for even better visibility put a glow stick around the toddler's neck.

In the excitement of trick or treating, toddlers have been known to trip on their shoelaces. You can prevent this by making sure that their shoelaces are double tied. Toddlers may also trip on pumpkins placed on neighbors' porches and steps. You can prevent it by holding them.

It is safer to check all candies before they are eaten by your toddler. Look for any signs of tampering. Accepting home made candies from unknown people can be unsafe. Visit only neighbors properly known to you for trick or treating with your toddler. Toddlers should be kept away from hard eatables that can choke like nuts, hard candies, popcorn or anything that cannot be easily cut into pieces.

In the home avoid any Halloween decorations which can be hazardous to your toddler. Toddlers can be very curious and adventurous especially when they see new and colorful things. It is best to make sure that all small removable parts and decorations are out of reach of toddlers. The curious ones will often try to touch and play with the candle flames inside pumpkins.
