Halloween Treats for Kids with Allergies

Sandy James

Statistics are showing that more and more kids are developing food allergies early in life. The reason for this is unknown but it does create a problem for parents especially on fun holidays like Halloween.

Many children are allergic to peanuts, dairy products, wheat, and gluten. With all these allergies becoming more and more common to children, what can you buy to hand out at Halloween?

I have a grandson that is 3 years old and allergic to all of the above items. His parents have to use items like Egg Replacer to make him cookies or a birthday cake. He can't eat chocolate candy, store bought or homemade cookies, and many other items. Yet, he's still a child that wants to enjoy the birthday parties and holidays like Halloween just like any other child.

Handing out fruit such as apples isn't an option anymore because of horrible scares that have happened to kids over the years. So, what options do you have for Halloween treats for kids with allergies?

Stickers

Kids of all ages love stickers. They put them on cards, coloring books, and even the bathroom walls. Okay, that's not what we want the child to do with stickers but accidents happen.

You can find cheap stickers for Halloween treats at any of the dollar stores, Wal-Mart, and Walgreen's. It doesn't matter if they're Easter or St. Patrick's Day stickers as those holidays will come around soon enough.

Pencils

Pencils have come a long way from the plain old yellow #2's. Today, they're brightly colored with shiny metallics and lime green erasers. You can purchase several for a dollar which makes them cheaper than candy bars. Hobby Lobby, the dollar store chains, Wal-Mart, and Walgreen's all have these items in stock. They make a great Halloween treat so grab a bunch!

Notepads

While you're visiting the dollar store, look for little notepads that can be handed out to kids. Kids like to draw and if they're of school age, the notepads will come in handy.

Fruit Juice Boxes

Some people hand out cans of soda as a Halloween treat, however, handing out a fruit juice box is a better idea and more nutritional for the child. It can be more expensive than handing out candy bars, but it's free from allergies and the child can drink it.

Licorice Products

Licorice products are a good candy product for Halloween treats as they usually don't contain any dairy products, chocolate, or peanuts. Handing out black or red licorice is your choice. Most boys love how the black licorice discolors their teeth and mouth.

Candy Corn

The traditional candy corn products are usually safe for kids with allergies. There are now some chocolate candy corn products and these should be avoided.

Jelly Beans

Jelly beans are usually considered an Easter product, but you can find them in stores year round and many kids love them.

Gum Drops

Gum drops are a fruity candy that are made in different colors and fruit flavors. They contain no chocolate, peanuts, wheat, gluten, or dairy and are inexpensive.
