Halloween - X Rated Holiday?

Katie D
In the past few years, I have noticed a bizarre trend in women's Halloween costumes. They're disappearing.

Halloween is a holiday where you get to dress up as anything you want to be. It seems most women these days want to be strippers.

The craziest part of this trend is the notion that these costumes somehow relate to a profession other than taking one's clothes off for a living. Sexy nurse costumes? I have friends who are sexy and nurses, and they wear scrubs and crocs just like the nurses who aren't so sexy. The sexy nurse costumes are actually lingerie being marketed as Halloween costumes.

Perhaps lingerie companies saw profits declining, and decided to market bedroom wear as Halloween costumes? I know for sure I have never seen a cop in a 'Sexy Cop' outfit. Or a referee dressed in the sexy version of that costume. I have, however, seen strippers at bachelor parties and strippers for hire (think Days of Thunder here) wearing these outfits.

Do women who wear these costumes really think that anyone is buying that they're dressing up as cops, nurses or referees? Sure, the guys aren't complaining (and why would they?), but make no mistake, everyone knows it's a stripper outfit. At least dressing up as a Playboy Bunny is honest - yes, I want to dress up as someone who takes their clothes off for a living (and there's nothing wrong with that, at least it's honest!).

The stripper-wear and lingerie industry is undoubtedly profiting from the naive who actually believe that these costumes are Halloween costumes. Until they realize they're not, they'll keep on making a profit from bedroom wear-turned Halloween wear, and those of us who know the difference can sit back and laugh.

I think the vast, vast majority of women buying these outfits know exactly what they're doing and exactly what they're buying. They get attention for it, and it's on a night of the year when everybody can not only get away with it, but take pride in how sexy, slutty or skimpy their outfits are.
