Hand-Drawn Art Tutorial: How to Draw an Anime Eye
Welcome to the how to draw anime/manga 2: the anime eye tutorial.
This tutorial will take you through the basics of drawing the anime eye. The eye in manga and anime is one of the most distinct features of japanese animations. The eye is a window to your soul, and in japanese animations that eye can tell a lot of things, such as emotions, feelings, and even personality. So lets get cracking.
Step 1: Shape
The shape of the eye is determined in step one. You can use any shape you want, circles, squares, trianges, diamonds or even your own shape.
The anime eye usually has 2 seperate eyelids. A top eyelid with is usually longer and broader than the bottom eyelid, which is used to rest the iris.
If you want, you can join the top eyelid to the bottom eyelid
Step 2: Iris
Draw the Iris. It is usually a circle, or an oval.
Step 3: Pupil and Highlights
Add the pupil and highlights (the large white bits). Once again its a matter of preference but I usually do highlights first.
When the drawing the pupil, the pupil is usually the same shape as the iris. So if you have a circle iris, you will have a circle pupil. And if you have an oval iris, you will have an oval pupil.
Step 4: Shading/ Colouring
Shade/ colour the iris. There are many ways to shade the iris in, so experiment. There is no wrong way. You can even leave the iris white if you desire.
Some tips include to make sure you have a shadow for the upper eyelid. Another tip is to make the outline of the iris a bit darker and thicker so it stands out.
Notes:
If you want an western eye, add a second eyelid above the top eyelid.
Younger people have larger eyes, just like old people usually have smaller eyes.
Thick, dark and broad eyelids are great for drawing villians or people with evil intentions.
