Hand in Hand Remembering 9/11

Jesse Schmitt

September 11 was an event which changed every man, woman, and child in this nation. People's lives were upended, communities everywhere were frightened, confused, and the randomness of the event chilled everyone to the bone.

Ten years on, it's easy for us to look back and remember that fear and remember that loss. Community Board 1 and Board Chair Julie Menin invite everyone who will be in Manhattan around that time to reflect, remember, and unite.

The Hand in Hand, Remembering 9/11 will actually take place on 9/10/11. The event will take place on Saturday September 10 at 8:46 am. Thousands of people will grasp hands "to form a human chain along the waterfront at the tip of Lower Manhattan heading north." This symbolic event will be in defiance of those who have tried to shake us from our homes and those who have tried to make our daily lives something to fear.

At the Hand in Hand Remembering 9/11 event there will also be a Wall of Remembrance in Battery Park City. It's here that folks can post messages and remember those we've never forgotten; those we will not forget. Parts of the Wall of Remembrance will be kept on display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum and will remain on display for years to come.

Not for profit groups will also be on hand at the Hand in Hand Remembering 9/11 event. These groups will be hosting special community service projects at various locations throughout the neighborhood.

If you'd like to participate in the Hand in Hand Remembering 9/11 event you have to register. Registration is free and open to anyone but you will not be able to participate in the events if you don't pre-register.

Once you have pre-registered you will be contacted by Community Board 1 representatives with instructions on where you need to go to check in. The very carefully choreographed event is a reminder of the real dangers we still face. However better safe than sorry seems to be the ethos of Hand in Hand event organizers and I can't say that I blame them.

9/11 is a tragic day for us all to remember where we were and what happened when the attacks on America happened. Still the biggest lesson for those who committed those attacks is that we are still here. We not only survived, we have thrived and continue to do so.

To register for the Hand in Hand Remembering 9/11 event you can go to the website HERE. Hand in Hand also has a Twitter account and Facebook page.

Stand tall; reflect, remember, unite.

We will never forget. I remember the moment, the phone calls and the tears. It was a horrible, senseless act of terrorism. cheers
