Handbag Trends for Fall/Winter 2010/11

Kimberley Heit
Fall is here and winter is right around the corner, so it's time to consider whether your handbag needs updating. This article looks at six popular handbag trends for fall/winter 2010/11.

1. Satchels

The satchel style handbag is one of the most popular silhouettes for fall/winter 2010/11. Think traditional school styles that feature straps that come over the front and buckle closed. Many have removal shoulders straps and a hand held option. Couple this with a roomy interior and you have yourself a very practical handbag style.

If you like a vintage appeal, there are several satchels that carry this vibe. For example, there are styles in traditional looking tan leather, styles with old looking locks, and generally worn in looking styles. You will also find slightly more lady like versions with accents like patent leather, classic black business like satchels, and funky styles in bright colors or prints.

In addition you will find styles at all price points. If you don't want to spend a lot many chain stores have options for less than $100. You'll find moderate priced versions (under $300) offered by brands like Fossil and Karen Millen. If you have serious cash to spend, the versions by Mulberry and Proenza Schouler are rather to die for.

2. Shearling trim bags

If you really want to bring your look into winter, several brands are offering handbags that feature a touch of sheepskin. These designs look good with casual, more bohemian outfits and could tie right in with the outdoor ugg boot.

3. Animal prints & skins

There has been no stopping animal print in the fashion world, during recent seasons. Snakeskin and leopard print look to be the most popular for fall/winter. In the previous season, or two we saw versions printed on bright background colors like electric blue. This year it is more about believable natural tones again. If you choose something relatively classic like this, it is likely to be a wardrobe asset for many years to come.

4. Cute clutches

Many women can't help but be drawn to a cute little clutch bag, even if it doesn't hold anything, but the bare essentials. Designers are ensuring that we are spoiled for choice in this handbag sector for fall/winter. You will find mini handbags, virtually no bigger than your hand, by designers like Gucci and Lanvin. Judith Lieber continues to amaze with her crystal embellished creations. This season you'll find a fish, zebra and Dachshund. And Alexander McQueen has some interesting offerings. There is a handheld skull closure clutch and a style called the knuckle duster box clutch, which can be carried by placing your fingers into the knuckle duster top. It too has the iconic skull head embellishment.

5. Heavy metal details

Hardware is continuing to be utilized for decorative, rather than just practical purposes. You'll find handbags with chains, all different kinds of studs, extra zippers, decorative eyelets and buckles.

6. Floral tapestry style prints

Many designers are bringing back floral tapestry prints that were ever so popular during the 1990's in luggage. Generally this trend seems mostly confined to a few affordable chain store brands, so how well it will take off on the street is yet to be seen.

If you have some spare cash to lash out on a new handbag, have fun shopping!
