Size, Weight and Depth
In general, personal carry-along items will differ so the size of the bag has to fit the need of the person. Carrying a wallet and a hair brush can be justified with a small hobo or messenger while a mother of three may need something larger for items like extra snacks, wipes or a mini first aid kit. It's also important to take the weight of a purse into consideration. Heavy handbags can weigh you down and become cumbersome while carrying it, as well as, lead to bad posture. Although large and deep handbags are popular, this style can be problematic when it comes to items sinking to the bottom, also.
Material
The choices of materials for handbags are limitless. Pleather, vinyl, leather, suede, canvas or nylon and other types of materials offer different standards of durability. Handbags in materials such as nylon and canvas can be tossed in the wash when dirty. On the other hand, leather bags need to be hand cleaned with warm soap and water or with a special leather cleaner.
Closures
The type of closure on a handbag is very important. Magnets, zippers, buttons, clasps and ties are just a few closures found on different handbag styles. Your choice of closure will be personal but do remember the whole reason for having a closure is to keep your contents in the bag. For example a bag with a zipped zipper will be less likely to have items fall out when your purse is sitting on a table or floor.
Style
Hobo, satchel, clutch, shoulder, messenger and tote bags are just a few of the popular styles available. Each style has a particular set-up with compartments to make your handbag easy to access and organize. Another detail to pay attention to are the straps.
In some cases the handbag may boast single, double, braided or layered style straps. A strap that is braided has the potential to fray more quickly than a solid strap while one of the straps of a double strap handbag may have issues with staying on your shoulders.
Design
Designs have been created with grommets, studs, embroidery and bead work but should be chosen with your personal style in mind. Certain designs will last longer than others while trendy pieces may cause your handbag to be outdated quickly.
