With the world becoming more threatening since 911, people have gotten very aware of the violence in our world. We have news 24/7 today and most of it is negative, in the nature of news. But the realities of these days includes actual facts. There are millions of illegal aliens in our midst. Our borders are more porous than ever with an understaffed border patrol. And violent gangs roam the streets of many large cities and even some minor ones. The prison and court systems are overloaded, so plea-bargains often let criminals back on the streets to commit crimes against the public again and again. And finally, the threat of lawsuits has hobbled the police and the school administrators
To sanction bad behavior or take aggressive action to correct it. Many people are taking self-defense courses to protect themselves, but a good number of them are also becoming convinced that they need a gun to protect themselves. Memphis is a very violent city, but fortunately there are some groups and organizations where people can learn about gun safety and be trained to use their personal hand gun.

Rangemaster has long been a big business in the Memphis area. They have a great shooting range and a program that teaches all facets of safety and prudent use of a gun. What's great about this group is that they have auxilliary courses in urban safety, anti-car-jacking techniques and basic household safety. Their Introduction to Handgun course starts with a basic personal protection module, then progresses to more advanced modules. All their instructors have incredibly impressive employment histories with the military, or federal, state or local law enforcement, so everyone taking a course with these folks should be confident that they will be informed about the present laws and all the important training on how to use a handgun prudently. There are Level I and II classes ongoing every month of the year. 2611 S. Mendenhall Road/ Memphis, Tennessee 38115/ (901) 370-5600.

American Combat Institute is actually located in McKensie, TN, not too far from Memphis. This group trains in all facets of reality education which could be summarized to include wilderness training, family protection, children's self-defense, and gun instruction. They offer a "balance of physical, mental and emotional energies" to make students better equipped to be able to use their gun skills more effectively to ward off attacks of all sorts. Contact them at tbirmingham1@charter.net?subject=acmonline

The Pink Pistols is actually a new organization which was formed in 2003 to support the gay community in its efforts to protect itself. You do NOT have to be gay or lesbian to take lesson with this group-they welcome everyone who wants to acquire skills in self-defense and in responsible hand gun use for protection against attack of all sorts. They go on range trips and have rental guns for practice or member can loan out theirs for use during instruction. They advise renting a gun at first and going for a light caliber model. Their site actually has some good basic information on it which anyone can use before enrolling with any training group. They advise contacting them by phone at 901-383-9110.

Um, what about Range USA?? It is located in Bartlett and is hands down the best range in the Memphis area. The staff at Range USA is friendly and respectful, unlike the folks over at Rangemaster. Furthermore, they offer tons of classes for everyone.
