John Dillon Park Campgrounds , in the Adirondack Mountains of up state New York is one of the few private parks that is handicapped accessible. As a matter of fact, it is one of the few campgrounds anywhere that is fully handicapped accessible. John Dillon was CEO of International Paper. The company dedicated the park to him upon his retirement. The park was opened in June fo 2006, so it is almost brand spanking new. The park is open for campers, with a 10 night maximum, and for day users. Pets are allowed, with restrictions and no alcohol without special permission. The rules regarding open fires are very strict and all the rules are enforced. The campgrounds have lean tos with picnic tables, the trails are paved, making them easy for wheel chairs, they have kayaking and pontoon boat that you can drive a wheelchair right on to.
Wellesley Island State Park Campgrounds in the Finger Lakes Region of New York is one park that has a good deal of handicapped accessible features. They have a 1/4 mile hiking trail that is handicapped accessible, with picnic areas and a butterfly house. Allegany State Park Campgrounds, - Quaker Area, New York is another State Park that has a variety of handicapped accessible facilities. And is a bit different. AS a matter of fact Allegany State Park had activities for the handicapped all year long. They have campgrounds and cabins that are fully handicapped accessible. AS for the handicapped accessible activities, there are a Beach, Camper Recreation, Fishing, Picnic Tables, Showers, Food Stores, Hunting, Pavilions, Playground, Recreation Programs, Snowmobiling and Tent/Trailer Sites. You can see the difference by comparing these two state parks. One has hiking, one does not. One has a beach, one does not. Things are improving for the handicapped. They no longer have to settle for just one or two things to do. But there is still along way to do to educate people on just what handicapped individuals have a right to expect in any place that has public access.
