Handmade Fleece Hats & Scarves for American Girl Dolls
Try These “No Sew” Scarves and “Easy Sew” Hats
Make a "no sew" fleece scarf for a girl's best friend.
Materials:
Fleece material, about 24 inches by 5 inches
Good fabric scissors
Yard stick or measuring tape
Fabric marker
Steps:
Choose the perfect pretty fleece from bold blues to lovely lavender hues. Measure and mark off for a scarf that is about 24 inches by 5 inches.
A square yard of fleece could potentially make four fleece scarves with enough left over for a hat, purses or mittens.
Cut out the fleece scarf and make the edges fringed cutting into the ends of the scarf repeatedly about one inch in.
Tip: It's fun to make matching fleece scarves for girls and their dolls.
Make an "easy sew" fleece hat to warm the head of the doll wants her heart.
Materials:
Fleece materials that can be cut into an 8-inch diameter circle
Scissors
Needle and thread or sewing machine
Since there really is so little sewing, these fleece doll hats can be whipped up on a machine in a jiffy or stitched up by hand in a matter of minutes.
Steps:
Once you cut out the eight each diameter circle, you will then cut it in half. Take the top half of your circle and turn it upside down, still atop the bottom circle. You will now see a somewhat "hourglass" shape. Pick the two pieces up together from the center so that they hang back to back and take on a hat shape.
Since fleece is generally the same on both sides, you can now stitch the hat from left to right and turn it inside out. Now roll up an inch or so for the forehead fold of the hat. Go inside and do a few stitches on either side to keep the fold in place.
Optional:
You can choose a complimentary yarn and stitch in and out through the top of the hat leaving about two inch loops. Make about eight loops and tie off the yarn inside. Now cut each of the loops open for a fun ball atop the fleece hat.
The fleece hat and scarves can be made by a variety of ages for a myriad of reasons. You can make them for doll owners as a gift. They also make great fundraiser sale items for events like Relay for Life. Tweens can make their own DIY hat or scarves for their favorite dolls or these simple crafts can be a great activity and take home gift for a doll birthday party.
