Handmade Furniture and Wood Crafts from Ghana

Jackie Barlow
Ghana's handmade furniture and woodcrafts are unique, speak so eloquently about the historical African tribal culture, and are extremely well made. Beautiful sustainable woods are chosen and then crafted by exceptional artists and normally finished with non-toxic earth paints in warm colors.

Contemporary designed creations blend the African craftsmanship with useful and magnificent furniture and other wood crafts that will find a place of honor in your home or office and are so different in their creation that you are happy and proud to point them out as showpieces to your visitors. Regardless what decorating theme you use, these pieces will blend in and set off your room and will create conversation pieces.

Some items will incorporate zebra skins and most have intricate etchings for an unusual textured finish. Whether a storage cabinet, a framed mirror, magazine rack, tables, stools, or whatever, each piece is a masterpiece of its own.

Many pieces are designed by popular artists in Ghana who are known for their individual workmanship and some of whom have won awards and have gone on exhibitions to show the value and skill of their works.

Woods such as cedar, ofram, hardwood, and (for special beauty) mahogany are used to create masterpieces. Ghana closely monitors their forests to ensure that the woods needed for furniture and craft production will be available for many years to come.

Worldstock is a handcrafted product with subtle variations in sizing and design from piece to piece.

To sharpen their skills. young talented hand carvers must take continuing education in the techniques of their craft. One noted shop owner adds much to the economy of several villages by employing scores of carvers in his large shop and also believes in educating them and improving their quality of life.

Many carvings have ancient meanings like the following:

One interesting symbol is the 'Sankofa" in the shape of a backwards-looking bird symbolizing embracing heritage and ancestry.

A friendship table is meant for friends to give to each other signifying that they don't see or speak any evil between them.

Beautifully engraved tables with multiple elephants symbolizes family togetherness.

A popular item is a tribal chair used in small towns and villages.

Stools offer a modern interpretation to the fable of the sacred Golden Stool used in the coronation of kings which came down from the heavens to the first Asante king.
