Handmade Halloween Decorations: Spooky Spider Webs

It's time to set a spooky scene,

Pumpkins and the dead will all rot,

But plastic decorations just will not.

You can go creepy and still be green,

Make crafts from natural materials this Halloween.

You can treat your family to some fun Halloween decorations without playing lots of "plastics fill the landfill" tricks on the environment.

Materials needed for the Spooky Spider Web:

-around 6 twigs about 1 to 2 ft. long

-Wood glue or a hot glue gun (recommended)

-sea shell (or acorn)

Optional:

-2 brown or black chenille stems

-2 craft wiggly eyes

To create the spooky spider web:

There are three layers in this spooky spider web. You will need to break the following numbers of twigs into the following lengths.

For the outside layer:

You will need 8 twigs approximately 6 inches long.

Place one on the bottom and one of the top about 12 inches apart.

Place one on either side, again about 12 inches apart.

Now place the remaining 4 twigs on the corners, leaving some overlap.

Attach with wood glue or a hot glue gun.

For the middle layer:

The middle layer is made up of 8 twigs, again forming an octagon.

However, the twigs should be only 4 inches each for the top and bottom and about 2 inches each for the corners.

For the center layer:

The center layer is simply a square made of 4 twigs about 3 inches each.

Lastly add 4 twigs that start at the corners of the middle square and cross over all three layers to hold it together.

The easiest thing to do is to look at the photo, guestimate and experiment. This craft is supposed to look rustic, not perfect.

To create the spider:

There are lots of options to have fun with here. We have used both acorns and seashells for the spider's body. Either conforms to the natural materials theme.

We have, as shown in the photograph, added small touches of non-natural materials for a great effect. We used two chenille stems cut into eight spider legs. We also used two wiggly craft eyes.

You could stay all natural and use straw for the spider legs and small pebbles for the eyes.

This eco-friendly Halloween decoration looks great hanging on a window or door.
